The amount of compromised data, including passwords and credit card information, increased by a whopping 43% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to security research group Bitsight TRACE.
The State of the Underground report also found that 20% of data breach victims were organizations in the United States.
Notably, the report identified 2.9 billion completely separate sets of credentials exposed, a significant increase from the 2.2 billion stolen passwords recorded in the 2023 report.
This information is now available for use by bad actors on the dark web.
As for stolen credit cards, there were 14.5 million cards listed on underground crime forums, up 20% from the previous year.
Bitsight believes that the increase in credential theft is one of the reasons for the increase in password breaches.
As for stolen credit cards, Bitsight confirmed that the increase was largely due to a spike in the number of exposed US credit cards.
Specifically, the number of cards from other countries around the world decreased by 1.6 million, but the list of cards from the United States increased by 4.5 million, accounting for 80.7% of the total number of compromised cards in 2024.
