More than 100,000 ChatGPT accounts have just been discovered to be hacked and are being sold on the Dark Web market (illegal hidden web), including thousands of accounts in Vietnam.

Specifically, researchers from security firm Group-IB have discovered a worrying trend involving more than 100,000 devices infected with malware such as Raccoon, Vidar and Redline. These computers all contain ChatGPT account login information.

Vietnam ranks 4th in the list of countries with the most compromised ChatGPT accounts.

Group-IB found transaction logs of information-stealing malware on Dark Web markets (illegal hidden web) through its Threat Intelligence platform. At its peak in May 2023, up to 26,802 ChatGPT accounts were hacked and sold. Vietnam ranked fourth among the 10 countries attacked by hackers with 4,771 accounts.

ChatGPT is increasingly popular and widely used by workers from software development to business. The default setting stores user questions and chatbot responses, increasing the risk of sensitive information being exposed, leading to unauthorized access and cyber attacks on businesses and individuals globally.

Group-IB also said that ChatGPT is not only popular in the above jobs but it has also spread to the underground world . Experts discovered that many hackers want to take advantage of chatbots to write malware and perform other malicious acts. Accordingly, a large number of ChatGPT accounts were hacked by the notorious Raccoon information-stealing program.

To avoid being hacked, Group-IB recommends that users regularly change their passwords and implement two-factor authentication to minimize the risk of their ChatGPT account being compromised.
