Fostering a spirit of unity

From May 29th to 31st, the first "Cultural, Sports and Tourism Festival of Mountain Ethnic Groups" took place in A Luoi 1, A Luoi 2, and A Luoi 3 communes, Hue City. This meaningful cultural event aimed to honor and promote the unique culinary beauty of the ethnic groups, thereby fostering strong solidarity among the mountain ethnic groups in the city.

The festival attracted nearly 600 artisans, amateur artists, actors, and athletes from 11 communes and wards with ethnic minority populations in the city. The atmosphere was vibrant with many unique cultural, sports, and tourism activities. A highlight was the exhibition space showcasing traditional handicrafts and characteristic OCOP products of ethnic minorities at the Square and the Ethnic Culture Center of A Lưới 2 commune. In addition, there were many other attractive activities such as a highland cuisine competition and a market introducing local specialties.

Elder Ho Nhat Tan (Po Nghi 1 hamlet, A Luoi 2 commune) said that this year's festival is being held in the context of the city implementing a two-tiered local government model, opening up a phase of development with many new opportunities and requirements, so the people are very excited. Representatives from A Luoi 2 commune participated in the culinary competition at the market fair with many dishes typical of the mountainous region. This is not only an opportunity to introduce traditional culinary culture but also helps descendants understand more about their ancestors, contributing to the unity of ethnic groups, and promoting local cuisine to tourists.

While busily weaving baskets and containers (traditional containers used by ethnic minorities in mountainous areas), artisan Tran Duc Dung (Pa Ring 2 village, A Luoi 1 commune) shared that each ethnic group's traditional handicrafts have their own unique characteristics. Having the opportunity to showcase traditional weaving techniques to tourists allows artisans like him to learn, connect, hone their skills, and promote local traditional handicrafts.

Mr. Phan Duy Khanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of A Luoi 2 commune, assessed that the festival is a cultural activity with profound significance, maintained for many years and has become a major festival for the ethnic minorities in the mountainous region. This is an opportunity for localities to meet, exchange ideas, learn from each other, and strengthen solidarity among ethnic groups; at the same time, it introduces and promotes the image of the people, culture, and development potential of the mountainous area of Hue city.

Connecting tourism, creating sustainable livelihoods.

Within the framework of the festival, the People's Committee of A Luoi 1 commune, in coordination with the Department of Tourism, organized the introduction of destinations, discovery tours, ecotourism, and community-based tourism in the A Luoi region. Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, Chairman of the People's Committee of A Luoi 1 commune, said that these tourism promotion activities have provided unique experiences for tourists, contributing to positioning the A Luoi tourism brand. This is also an important leverage to help shift the economic structure, create sustainable livelihoods, and increase income for local people.

Currently, the locality is implementing the A Lưới 1 Commune Tourism Development Project for the period 2026-2030, with a vision to 2045, aiming to orient tourism development towards sustainability, effectively exploiting the potential and advantages of natural landscapes, traditional culture, and community tourism. The Commune People's Committee has conducted surveys and assessments of tourism development potential in advantageous areas such as the A Lin hydroelectric reservoir, Dốc Con Mèo, Ra Ka, A Lin stream, and the A Nôr community tourism site, and has encouraged households with the necessary resources to participate in providing accommodation, food, cultural and ecological experiences.

Simultaneously, the role of the A Nor Community Tourism Cooperative and the A Lin Community Tourism Cooperative will be gradually strengthened and promoted to create a focal point for linking and coordinating tourism activities in the locality. In addition, the locality will actively integrate resources from programs and projects supporting socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas to implement activities to improve the landscape, build a green, clean, and friendly tourism environment; and gradually form community tourism destinations associated with preserving the traditional cultural space of the Pa Co people.

According to Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City, the western part of Hue City - with the majestic A Luoi region as its center - has long been known not only as a heroic land in the resistance war, but also as a unique cultural space, a place where many precious traditional values of the Pa Co, Ta Oi, Co Tu, Pa Hy, and Bru-Van Kieu ethnic groups converge and are preserved.

“The festival is also an opportunity to introduce traditional handicrafts, promote ecotourism, community tourism, and experiential tourism destinations in the mountainous region. This contributes to preserving traditional crafts, enhancing the value of local products, and promoting sustainable tourism development linked to cultural preservation,” Mr. Phan Thanh Hai affirmed.
