With the goal of connecting members, supporting and helping each other, improving the quality of life for the elderly, in recent years, intergenerational self-help clubs in Bac Yen district have become a solid support for the elderly.

Established in 2018, the intergenerational self-help club in Cao Da 1 village, Phieng Ban commune has 100 members, of which 70% are elderly. In its activities, the club's management board has promptly and fully deployed specific contents and tasks to members. In particular, income support activities have created conditions for 6 members to borrow capital from 4-6 million VND in 2 years. The club also agreed to establish 5 volunteer groups to maintain activities to support, care for and help the elderly in difficult circumstances.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh, Head of the Cao Da 1 Intergenerational Self-Help Club, shared: At each meeting, members receive health care, legaleducation , and participate in cultural, artistic, and physical activities; and exchange arts with clubs in and outside the province. Thereby, helping members improve their physical and mental health.
In 2023, Muong Khoa commune established two intergenerational self-help clubs in Pot and Chen villages. Mr. Lu Van Chuyen, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, shared: The intergenerational self-help clubs have conducted regular health check-ups for members, such as measuring blood pressure, weight, checking cardiovascular health, consulting on osteoporosis prevention and control, self-care methods, etc. Members also help poor households harvest agricultural products, clean houses, and repair livestock barns.
Currently, Bac Yen district has established and maintained effective operations of 6 intergenerational self-help clubs in the communes of Muong Khoa, Song Pe, Phieng Ban and the town, attracting 340 members. The club management boards have been trained on how to implement club activities to apply them in their operations. The clubs have built a fund of over 60 million VND to maintain operations and provide loans to 10 members to develop production. The club management boards have also proactively coordinated with medical facilities to organize health check-ups, consultations and treatment for nearly 200 people. Maintain effective operations of health care, culture and arts clubs, helping the elderly live happily and healthily.
Mr. Lu Van Lay, Head of the District Elderly Association, said: The intergenerational self-help club model was established to care for and protect the legitimate rights and interests and contribute to supporting the material and spiritual life of the elderly; encourage the whole society to care for the elderly to live happily, healthily and happily. The Elderly Associations at all levels in the district hope that the State will pay attention and provide financial support to replicate the model. At the same time, implement activities to care for and promote the role and position of the elderly in the community, contributing to the successful implementation of the targets and tasks of socio-economic development in the locality.
Bac Yen district strives to establish 3 more intergenerational self-help clubs by 2025, bringing the total number of clubs in the district to 9. To achieve this goal, the district continues to effectively implement the activities of existing clubs; organize club members to visit models, exchange and learn operational experiences; mobilize resources from organizations, individuals and businesses to participate in replicating the club model in the area.
