Meeting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Battalion 83

(Baoquangngai.vn) - On the morning of August 5, at Guest Station T50 (Quang Ngai City), the Liaison Committee of Battalion 83 held a meeting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding (August 3, 1963 - August 3, 2023). More than 400 veterans of the Battalion from all over the country attended. Attending the meeting were Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan; Lieutenant Colonel Tran The Phan - Commander of the Provincial Military Command; Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ngo Thanh Trang, former Political Commissar , Head of the Liaison Committee of Battalion 83...

At the meeting, generations of war veterans who fought and worked in Battalion 83 reviewed the heroic tradition of the unit and the memories of their comrades' time on the life-and-death trenches.

The Battalion Liaison Committee also informed about the activities of the Liaison Committee in the past 5 years. Notably, it organized many meaningful activities such as searching for and collecting martyrs' remains to bury them in martyrs' cemeteries; visiting and helping comrades with difficult lives; visiting sick and deceased comrades. In particular, after many years of requesting and campaigning, in 2022, a memorial stele for 47 martyrs of the Battalion was built in Ho Ba Nam, Hanh Dung commune (Nghia Hanh).

Speaking at the meeting, on behalf of the provincial leaders, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan expressed gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices of the Battalion's officers and soldiers for the cause of fighting for national independence and fulfilling noble international duties.

Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Hoang Tuan sent best wishes to the war veterans and their relatives; hoping that the war veterans of Battalion 83 will continue to promote the noble qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" and the heroic tradition of the unit, toeducate the younger generation and contribute to building the homeland and the country.

On this occasion, the Liaison Committee of Battalion 83 presented gifts to veterans and relatives of deceased war veterans in difficult circumstances.

Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ngo Thanh Trang, former Political Commissar, Head of the Liaison Committee of Battalion 83, presented gifts to relatives of veterans of the battalion.

On August 3, 1963, at the foot of Cao Muon Mountain, Ba Son Commune, now Ba Vinh Commune (Ba To), Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command announced the decision of the Provincial Party Standing Committee to establish the 83rd Infantry Battalion. The battalion consisted of 4 companies, including a number of officers and soldiers of Battalion 80 of Military Region 5.

During the 12 years of fighting from 1963 to 1975, Battalion 83 fought over 500 battles. During the period from 1976 to 1992, the unit was mobilized to the Central Highlands to fight against the Fulro saboteurs, protect the southwestern border and fulfill international obligations to help Cambodia. After 60 years of building, fighting and growing, Battalion 83 has achieved many glorious feats. The unit was awarded many noble Orders and Medals and was honored with the 8 golden words "Brave, resilient, quick to fight, complete annihilation". In September 1975, Battalion 83 was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
