Gen Z today is no longer interested in dressing well, the trend of wearing weird, ugly, dirty clothes is on the rise

Current fashion trends are creating mixed waves as elements like ketchup stains, bleached eyebrows and bulky boots become the center of attention.

"I'm a pretty messy eater. I used to wipe stains away, but now I don't. A little oil or ketchup on my shorts, I think they look really cool," Isaiah Lat, a 20-year-old student, DJ and stylist from Chicago, confessed to The Guardian.

Isaiah says there's no one right term to describe his style. He favors old, homemade clothes, skinny jeans, capri pants, and visor-style sunglasses. He doesn't intentionally get sauce on himself before going out, but he does like his clothes to have "a little bit of a mark."

Gen Z favors styles that previous generations consider rustic

From such small details, we can see a new spirit creeping into the fashion world: letting go of rigid formality, rejecting perfect patterns.

Seemingly unrelated styles such as military shorts (a camouflage pattern derived from military uniforms), plaid flannel shirts, gothic makeup, oversized boots, or t-shirts with humorous "meme"-style text printed on them on social media... all express the same rebellious spirit.

According to Daniel Rodgers - a writer for British Vogue magazine, this trend mainly originates from Gen Z. They are "reusing" things that were considered old-fashioned by previous generations.

This is gradually overwhelming the "neat, clean" fashion standards that have dominated for many years, such as the casual sporty style or the image of shiny skin, thick eyebrows and Hailey Bieber-style faces that many white hot girls follow.

"We just want to be ourselves"

The way young people dress has changed dramatically over the past four years. Trend forecaster Sean Monahan points out that many young people are gradually abandoning streetwear - a style that used to be a symbol of urban youth, but is now dominated by brand-loving uncles and cryptocurrency players.

For Isaiah Lat - a student who often wears spaghetti-stained pants on the street - said his fashion inspiration comes from EDM parties at bars.

There, people dress in ways that many outsiders might call “sloppy” or “indecent.” He attributes this style to the rise of synth and techno music from artists like Charli XCX, Snow Strippers, Shygirl, and AG Cook—rebellious acts that sound like they came straight out of the movie Spring Breakers.

For Isaiah Lat, it was a rebellion: “We were so tired of old-fashioned fashion where everything was framed by big brands.

After years of political turmoil under Donald Trump, when the Supreme Court became conservative and many freedoms were taken away, we just wanted to be ourselves - dancing, dressing in the craziest way possible. This is a way to tell the world: we don't need anyone to define us."

Charli XCX makes rebellious fashion explode

According to Agus Panzoni - a trend forecaster for the fashion platform Depop, people no longer follow a specific style, but are free to mix and match many items according to their personal aesthetic taste.

Charli XCX’s song 360 , which is currently causing a stir among young people, also reflects that spirit. In the MV, Charli gathers famous hot girls on social networks with impressive appearances, from pale skin to sharp fox-like nails. They wear strange, eye-catching outfits that both satirize online culture and clearly show their own personalities.

Even eyebrows are changing. After years of bold, thick brows, many young people are now growing their brows as thin as thread, or even bleaching them to the point where they are almost invisible.

Agus Panzoni believes that the style in MV 360 is the revival of true rebellious fashion, not dominated by brands or advertising.

Street photographer Johnny Cirillo (New York) also agrees: "I have never seen street fashion as diverse as this past year. There are people wearing dark goth style, wearing giant metal jewelry like coming out of the movie Mad Max.

Some people pursue a futuristic style with strange metal details. They constantly experiment and hunt for unique items on second-hand groups or online shopping platforms."

This is not just a game of strangeness, but a passionate love affair that breaks all limits. Fashion is now entering the era of... beauty and ugliness.

But according to Harper's Bazaar, the current trend is even more extreme: it's chaotic. Young people don't need to live by a specific style anymore - they borrow from all sorts of cultures and mix them all into a non-standard mix.

"Everything is emerging. All styles are accepted, like a chaotic fashion party, free and without rules. More and more young people believe that there is no need to follow any fixed standards or styles. Just being yourself will always be attractive" - Harper's Bazaar commented.
