Thanks to growing galangal, many households in Cong Chinh commune have an income of hundreds of millions of dong per year.
In 2019, Mr. Nguyen Trong Dien, Yen Binh village converted 2 hectares of land growing squash to growing passion flower. Since converting to the new crop, income has increased significantly. 2 hectares yield about 30 tons of flowers each year, with an average selling price of 38,000 - 40,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, he earned nearly 700 million VND, 20 times more than growing rice.
Mr. Dien shared: "The flower is easy to grow, just need rain, moist soil, cut the strong vines to plant and it will survive. Growing the flower does not require too much capital, 1 hectare only needs 100 million VND to build concrete pillars, trellis wires, buy seedlings, prepare soil, cultivate beds... The growth cycle of the plant is up to 5 years so there is little need for reinvestment, every year only need to fertilize and weed but the income is many times higher than other traditional crops".
Mr. Nguyen Van Luat's family in Cu Phu village chose the model of growing galangal to increase their family income. Mr. Luat said: "Previously, galangal grew wild in fences, few people paid attention to its economic efficiency. In 2016, a trader came to the village and expressed his desire to buy this type of tuber, I pulled up galangal to sell. Seeing the effectiveness and high demand for galangal, I boldly planted it on a trial area of 1 sao of my family's hilly land. At the right time, galangal had a good harvest and good price, the first crop I earned 30 million VND, and now it has grown to 3.5 hectares. Currently, 1 hectare of galangal after deducting investment costs (seeds, fertilizers, care and harvesting costs of 250 million VND), brings the family a profit of 350 million VND/ha/year. Thanks to growing galangal, my family has a more prosperous life."
To improve income criteria, the commune has focused on propaganda and encouraging people to boldly change the structure of crops and livestock towards commodities. At the same time, actively apply scientific and technical advances to the production process. More than 1,104 hectares of local rice have been restructured by people with hybrid rice varieties, pure rice with high yield, quality and efficiency. At the same time, synchronous mechanization has been implemented in production, contributing to improving productivity and income value. Hundreds of households have boldly converted nearly 40 hectares of ineffective color land to grow passion flower, bringing high income for households from 300 million VND/ha/year or more.
Along with agricultural development, commercial services and rural industries are also being developed, creating conditions to attract and solve jobs for many workers. In addition to solving jobs on the spot, thousands of workers of working age go to work at companies, go abroad to work... Thanks to that, the current average income of people in the commune has reached 65 million VND/year.
When income is increased, it creates conditions for Cong Chinh commune to mobilize resources and complete the criteria in the advanced new rural construction. Mr. Le Khang Tuan, Deputy Chief of Office of Cong Chinh Commune People's Committee, said: "According to the review and assessment of the commune, at this time, Cong Chinh commune has completed 13/19 criteria of the advanced new rural commune. There are 6 criteria that have not been met, including the criteria: planning, traffic, education, quality of living environment, production organization... The commune has solutions and built a roadmap to implement these criteria."
