Storm Phoenix strengthens to level 15, likely to become a super typhoon today

Early this morning (November 9), typhoon Phuong Hoang (typhoon Fung Wong) continued to strengthen to level 15 (167-183km/h), gusting over level 17. It is forecasted that today the typhoon will likely strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on Luzon Island (Philippines).

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting at 1:00 a.m. on November 9, the center of storm Phuong Hoang was about 500km southeast of Luzon Island.

The strongest wind near the storm center is level 15 (167-183km/h), gusting to level 17 - one level higher than at 8:00 p.m. last night.

The storm is still moving rapidly in a west-northwest direction at a speed of about 30km/h.

Forecast from this morning to noon, storm Phuong Hoang is likely to strengthen into a super storm with strong winds of level 16 (184-201km/h), gusting over level 17.

"Storm Phuong Hoang is operating in a very favorable environment with high sea surface temperatures of 29-30 degrees Celsius, low vertical wind shear... so the storm's winds may strengthen into a super typhoon today.

When entering the sea area southeast of Luzon island, encountering unfavorable environmental conditions, the storm's winds are likely to weaken," the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

It is forecasted that around tonight, the storm will make landfall on Luzon Island and tomorrow morning (November 10), the storm is likely to enter the East Sea and become the 14th storm in 2025.

After entering the East Sea, the storm tends to deviate northward as the subtropical pressure branch in the north (the current that guides the storm's movement) weakens in intensity and expands further south of the storm.

As it moves to higher latitudes, the storm will enter the upper westerly wind flow and is likely to change direction to the northeast and move out of the East Sea, towards Taiwan. Thus, the storm is unlikely to affect our mainland.

This is the unusual point of this storm because normally, at the end of the season, storms often move west, even southwest, and make landfall in the southern central provinces of our country.

Due to the combined influence of cold air moving eastward, from tonight (November 8), the eastern sea area of the northern East Sea will have strong northeast winds of level 6-7, gusting to level 8-9.

From tonight, the wind in this sea area will increase to level 8-9, near the storm center it will increase to level 10-12, gusting to level 14-15, waves will be 3-5m high, then increase to 6-8m. The sea will be very rough.

From November 10 to 12, the sea area east of the northern East Sea is likely to be affected by strong storm winds of level 11-13, gusting to level 16, and waves 8-10m high.

All vessels operating in the above mentioned danger zones are susceptible to the effects of storms, strong whirlwinds, strong winds and large waves.
