World coffee prices rebounded at the end of the week. The US dollar fell after 6 consecutive weeks of increases and gold plunged, helping capital flow into commodity exchanges, including coffee.

Domestic coffee prices are trading in the range of VND118,500 - 119,200/kg. According to Reuters , although farmers have sold more coffee from the current harvest, they have not sold in large quantities, and prices are fluctuating strongly. In addition, weather conditions are more favorable and drying activities are going smoothly.

Robusta coffee prices have surged, dragging down arabica prices. The market rally was driven by concerns that supplies from Vietnam, the world’s largest robusta producer, will be reduced as it prepares for the long Lunar New Year holiday starting later this month, which typically disrupts coffee bean supplies.

Vietnam’s coffee exports are gradually improving thanks to increased supplies as harvest activities near completion. However, coffee prices are unlikely to increase further in the first quarter of 2025 due to increased supplies from Vietnam, according to an analysis by the Vietnam Commodity Exchange.

Meanwhile, coffee exports from Brazil, the world’s largest producer, are expected to slow this year, traders said, as the country’s biennial production cycle begins. Last year’s dry weather could also reduce the size of the 2025-26 crop. With significant declines in Brazil’s coffee inventories over the past two seasons, combined with a cyclical production cycle and ongoing concerns about adverse weather, coffee supplies from Brazil are expected to remain tight through 2025.

The US dollar ended the week lower after six consecutive weeks of gains. Investors are now waiting for the inauguration of President Donald Trump and the policies of the new US administration.

Traders in the interest rate futures market are expecting two rate cuts this year, but Fed Governor Christopher Waller signaled on January 17 that the Fed could cut rates further if economic data continues to weaken.

Regarding the Fed's next meeting, scheduled for January 29, the market believes that the central bank will likely keep interest rates unchanged.

Next week, investors will focus on the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. If Mr. Trump imposes heavy tariffs on imported goods as he has warned, sparking a trade war, the demand for holding gold as a hedge against risks may increase sharply, and capital invested in commodity trading, including coffee, may slow down.

“Uncertainties surrounding President Trump’s policies have been one of the factors supporting safe-haven assets like gold,” Meger told Reuters.

Sharing the same view, Nitesh Shah, strategist at WisdomTree, said: “There are many questions surrounding the tariff issue, such as how the tariff will be implemented. Many investors therefore turn to gold to hedge against the risk of depreciation of other assets, in case the new policies harm economic growth.” This is also the reason why the commodity market has an element of uncertainty during this time.
