In the past two years, the price of coffee beans has been continuously increasing, making growers extremely excited. Many gardeners have decided to plant seeds to increase the area of this crop. Grasping the market demand, some nurseries have started to grow seeds to serve the people.
Dozens of coffee seed beds in Mr. Ly's nursery have already been signed by owners to buy them.
At Mr. Pham Van Ly's coffee nursery in Son Lang village, Phu Son commune, Bu Dang district, dozens of coffee seedlings taller than a hand span have been purchased. Mr. Ly said that since the beginning of the year, coffee seedlings have been purchased more strongly than in previous years. Previously, the buyers were mainly farmers, buying small quantities to replant on old land, or intercropping. Now many people buy large quantities of 1,000-2,000 trees to plant on land converted from pepper or intercropping in cashew gardens. Not only people in the province, many people in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces also come here to buy seedlings. Coffee seedlings are "hot" again, many traders buy wholesale to resell to people.
Mr. Pham Van Ly chose to grow jackfruit coffee as a rootstock because, according to him, this is a drought-resistant variety, suitable for the climate and soil conditions in Binh Phuoc and the Central Highlands.
Mr. Ly said that regarding coffee seedlings, the current general situation is that supply cannot meet demand. Many households are competing to plant new and replant coffee, causing the price of seedlings to increase and the supply to be scarce. This year, my family has planted 500,000 jackfruit coffee trees, grafted with TR4, dwarf green, and Thien Truong coffee varieties, to serve the needs of the people. However, due to the high demand for new planting, the price of coffee seedlings is also almost double compared to previous years. Currently, the price of coffee seedlings is constantly changing, seedlings in small pots that have not been grafted are 6-7 thousand VND/tree, while large pots that have been grafted are 14-15 thousand VND/tree. Since the beginning of the year, I have sold more than 15 thousand coffee seedlings.
Mr. Ly directly waters the grafted coffee garden to keep the plants moist.
Coffee seedling nursery is an important first step in the production chain, helping to create healthy, well-developed seedlings. This process helps to optimize coffee yield and quality, bringing high economic efficiency to farmers. Proper nursery technique also helps to protect the tree variety, avoid degeneration and ensure a stable seed source for the following crops.
Workers are grafting coffee seedlings.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan in village 3, Ea Tieu commune, Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province has been hired by Mr. Ly to be a technician for coffee trees for many years. Ms. Toan has been attached to coffee trees for more than 30 years, so she has a very good grasp of the technique. “If you want a standard grafted coffee tree, you must first pay attention to the rootstock, then the buds and grafted eyes. If grafting with buds, you must choose buds that are not too young, not too old and not fertilized. As for grafted trees, they must be 5-6 months old to be used for grafting. Coffee varieties not only determine the quality of the beans but also directly affect the yield and resistance to pests and diseases,” Ms. Toan shared.
Currently, the price of coffee seedlings has increased 2-3 times compared to 3 years ago and in fact there are not many seedlings left. The reason for the sudden increase in the price of coffee seedlings this year is because the price of coffee beans on the market has increased, people are focusing on buying seedlings to reinvest in old coffee gardens. Therefore, many coffee seedlings nurseries are "out of stock" due to the strong increase in demand from people.
Traveling more than 50km from Gia Nghia town, Dak Nong province to Bu Dang district to buy coffee seedlings, Mr. Tran Van Bau said that this year, coffee prices have increased, so his family boldly destroyed more than 1 hectare of old, low-yielding coffee trees to replant. Although there are many seedling businesses in Dak Nong province, they are all out of stock. Hearing that there are still many seedlings in Bu Dang district, he went to Mr. Ly's nurseries to buy them. "I planned to buy more than 3,000 coffee seedlings, but I have only been to 2 facilities to collect a few hundred seedlings, not enough to meet the demand. I have never seen people buying coffee seedlings as much as this year," said Mr. Bau.
