May 1 is International Labor Day in more than 160 countries, including most major coffee consuming and producing countries such as Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, India and many European and African countries.

Since the beginning of the season, domestic coffee prices have remained high, thanks to stable income from other agricultural products such as durian, pepper and areca nuts, coffee growers have better financial potential. They proactively sell in batches to keep prices stable instead of selling massively.

The financial costs of storing coffee have increased this year, forcing many exporters to buy just enough and fix prices in small lots to avoid risks. In this context, the role of regulating the market has gradually shifted from international businesses and importers to farmers themselves, who now have the initiative to control the supply of goods.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in July 2025: Down 227 USD/ton, to 5,142 USD/ton.

Delivery September 2025: Down 213 USD/ton, to 5,103 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

July 2025 delivery: Down 17.05 cents/lb, to 383.7 cents/lb.

September 2025 delivery: Down 16.3 cents/lb, to 377.05 cents/lb.

Arabica coffee prices have surged in recent days, prompting technical-based funds to increase their buying activity, causing prices to fall sharply again. This development reflects the optimistic sentiment in the market as concerns about supply shortages become more evident.

The price differential between arabica and robusta is at its widest since late 2011. Arabica, the preferred variety in specialty coffee chains, is currently trading at a premium of about $1.60 per pound to robusta.

Arabica coffee futures prices are also seeing strong fluctuations as investors react to uncertainty about the global economy and coffee consumption prospects.

The UK will observe the May Day Bank Holiday on 5 May, resulting in the closure of the London robusta market on that day. However, the New York arabica market will operate as normal as the US will not be on holiday.
