Meanwhile, rubber prices on the SHFE-Shanghai exchange maintained stable momentum in the online session this morning.
In Thailand, rubber futures for August delivery remained flat at 72.26 baht/kg.
Rubber futures in Japan continued to rise amid concerns that supplies from Thailand could be affected by heavy rains. Meanwhile, positive signals from the US tire import market also supported investor sentiment, according to Business Recorder.
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains from July 10 to 13, with enough accumulated rainfall to cause flash floods and waterlogging in many key rubber growing areas. The adverse weather conditions could disrupt the harvesting and transportation of rubber, pushing up prices amid concerns of a short-term supply shortage.
Meanwhile, rubber demand is also being supported by the recovery of the auto industry in the United States, the world's largest tire consumer. According to a report from brokerage Galaxy Futures, the volume of imported tires in the United States increased by 6.4% in the latest month compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the number of new orders for cars and components in the United States in May also increased compared to the previous month, indicating that the manufacturing recovery is continuing. As vehicle production increases, demand for rubber, especially for tire production, also increases sharply.
In another related development, the Brazilian government has just decided to extend anti-dumping taxes on Chinese tires for another five years, after completing the third review, according to European Rubber Journal.
The measure, first imposed in 2009 and most recently renewed in 2019, is intended to protect domestic production from dumping. The tax will continue to be applied at a rate of $1.25 to $1.77 per kilogram on new car tires in the 65 and 70 series, which have rim sizes of 13–14 inches and widths of 165–185 mm, according to a July 4 announcement from the Brazilian Chamber of Foreign Trade.
Maintaining these tariffs could alter global tire trade flows, which could indirectly impact the market for natural rubber, a key input. China’s increased difficulty in exporting tires to Brazil could force it to adjust production or seek other markets, while other tire producers in Latin America or Southeast Asia could benefit.
