Family - "support" helps final year students reduce exam pressure

(PLVN) - Although in recent years, the 10th grade entrance exams and the National High School Exam have changed to reduce pressure on candidates. However, facing a turning point directly related to orientation and the future still makes candidates worried, parents become a support to keep their spirit optimistic and comfortable.

Myriad nameless worries

Recently, the story of a female student in Thanh Hoa who foolishly ended her life after failing the 10th grade entrance exam at a public high school is ringing an “alarm bell” for many families. It is known that the results of the 10th grade entrance exam were not as expected, so the female student wandered away, cutting off contact with her family. In a moment of despair, she threw herself into deep water, ending her life at the most beautiful age of youth.

On social networks, on fanpages of 12th grade students, a male student named NTM studying at Cau Giay High School, Hanoi shared about the pressure he is facing, with a tight exam review schedule from early morning to late night six days a week. The male student said that because some top universities announced their admission methods relatively late and constantly made changes, he chose to review for all exams from the capacity assessment, national high school exam, English transcript review,... leading to pressure that made TM extremely stressed.

In fact, the 2018 GeneralEducation Program aims to develop students' abilities and qualities. Therefore, in recent years, there have been many changes to create a healthy exam atmosphere for candidates, but there are still invisible pressures weighing on them. Such as the "disease" of achievement coming from many different sources such as schools, families or students themselves. Therefore, students always want to achieve the highest score in the final exam.

In addition to the pressure on performance, students also have to face constant changes in admission methods. For example, candidates taking the national high school exam in 2025 will have changes in the way graduation scores are considered, the transcript score will account for 50% of the three years of high school, the number of exam subjects will be reduced from 6 subjects to 4 subjects... Or a few weeks ago, a top university in social sciences in Hanoi announced the removal of block C right before the exam, causing confusion and anxiety among candidates and parents. However, after feedback from candidates and parents, the school continued to allow candidates to register for block C for admission to the school.

These invisible pressures are indirectly and directly affecting the mental and physical health of students. According to a study by the United Nations Children's Fund in Vietnam, one of the main causes of mental health disorders in Vietnamese children is academic pressure. In the upcoming time, with the transition exams, university entrance exams, etc., the pressure of exams for students is more likely to occur.

Parents become spiritual "support" for students

Many studies show that adolescents (10-19 years old) are at an age of strong psychological and physiological changes. During this period, children experience physical changes, puberty, hormonal development and the need for independence. This is a very rich emotional stage, but also contains many risks that affect mental health.

In Vietnam, according to a survey on mental health among high school students conducted by UNICEF Vietnam, about 1 in 6 children have seriously thought about suicide in the past 12 months.

Also in a published study, the University of Michigan (UM) showed that parents' attention to their children through words of encouragement, praise, and creating a low-pressure living environment will directly affect the learning and exam results of students. In the study, most children who receive active support from their parents will be more confident and have better academic performance than children who receive less attention or whose families have too many expectations.

During their adolescence, students do not have much experience in life. When faced with early failures such as the 10th grade entrance exam or the national high school exam, they easily become discouraged, lose confidence, and even do foolish things that affect their own future. Family is the support of students, receiving the care and love of parents will help candidates regain motivation and prepare for a new journey in the future.

Sharing with reporters of the Vietnam Law Newspaper, MSc. Nguyen Thu Hong, teacher at Nguyen Hue High School, Hanoi, said that to prevent negative behavior, parents can create a healthy living environment, encourage open communication between family members, and avoid being too busy to spend time with their children. Listen and share with children instead of imposing and forcing them to do what they want. This helps them feel respected and not abandoned. Parents should always be a "support" when children encounter difficulties, they will come back to talk, share and receive help from their parents.
