Compared to the record price of around 240,000 VND/dozen in September 2025, the price of dried coconuts has now dropped by more than 200,000 VND/dozen, equivalent to an 85% decrease. This sharp price drop has caused difficulties for many farmers, with income insufficient to cover production costs.
In Tam Ngai commune, Mrs. Tran Thi Hong Phuong's family recently harvested their 0.2-hectare coconut garden, yielding approximately 600 coconuts. However, due to low selling prices, income from this coconut crop has decreased significantly. Meanwhile, production costs remain high; the annual work of mulching and leveling the land to improve the garden alone cost over 3.5 million VND.
Similarly, the family of Mr. Thach Vi La in Song Loc commune recently harvested 700 coconuts from 0.2 hectares. Two years ago, this yield would have guaranteed his family over 7 million VND per month, but now it's less than 2 million VND per month, insufficient to cover the costs of care, fertilizer, etc.
According to many farmers, the reason for the drop in coconut prices is slow consumption, hesitant purchasing by businesses, while the export market is facing difficulties, affecting product output.
Vinh Long province currently has over 122,800 hectares of coconut trees, accounting for approximately 61% of the country's total coconut area; of which more than 114,000 hectares are bearing fruit, making a significant contribution to the livelihoods of local people. However, the reality of sharply falling coconut prices shows that the linkage between production and consumption is still limited, easily leading to the situation of "bumper harvest, low prices".
To address this issue, Vinh Long province is focusing on strengthening supply chain linkages, building sustainable raw material areas, promoting organic production standards, and expanding export markets. At the same time, it is encouraging businesses to invest in deep processing and increasing added value to stabilize the output of coconut products.
According to Chau Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Long province, in order for the coconut industry to develop sustainably, the province is focusing on removing "bottlenecks" in the linkage between businesses and farmers, building stable raw material areas, meeting standards for planting area codes and organic certification, and creating conditions for coconut products to participate more deeply in the export market.
In addition, the province will promote the development of deep processing, gradually shifting from exporting raw coconuts to high value-added products; at the same time, strengthening trade promotion, expanding markets, and contributing to stabilizing output.
Furthermore, businesses and farmers need to strictly adhere to commitments to linkage and harmoniously share benefits in order to overcome the "bumper harvest, low prices" situation, contributing to the sustainable development of the coconut industry in the future.
