African swine fever and control efforts
African swine fever continues to be a major concern for the livestock industry, especially in Son La province. Since the beginning of the year, the epidemic has spread to 107 groups and villages in 148 communes, wards and towns of 11 districts and cities, forcing the destruction of 2,351 pigs with a total weight of over 92.8 tons. Currently, there are still 11 communes in 5 districts that have not passed 21 days to be able to declare the end of the epidemic, according to a report from Son La province.
Immediately after testing positive for African swine fever, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Son La province coordinated with localities to strengthen propaganda on biosafety measures, barn hygiene, and nutritional supplements to enhance the resistance of pigs.
The Department also requested that livestock households strictly implement disease prevention measures to prevent the spread. At the same time, chemicals and lime powder have been distributed so that households can proactively disinfect and clean their barns to prevent the spread of the disease. Families are also instructed to destroy infected pigs according to regulations, while closely monitoring the disease situation to detect and thoroughly handle outbreaks.
Mr. Lu Van Truong, Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Son La province, said that the Department has advised the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to issue instructions to district-level service centers. Vaccination plans have been developed and implemented in key areas, while synchronous measures have been taken such as spraying disinfectants on vehicles entering and leaving epidemic areas and allocating nearly 10,000 liters of chemicals to localities to disinfect and sterilize barns in epidemic households and neighboring areas.
