Overview of the live pig market
In general, pig prices in all three regions continued to increase, with the Northern region maintaining the highest trading level in the country. Pig prices nationwide this morning ranged from 63,000 to 71,000 VND/kg.
Currently, the average price of live pigs nationwide is 65,900 VND/kg, surpassing the price in China of 65,000 VND/kg. A few months ago, the price of pigs in China was nearly 10,000 VND/kg higher than in Vietnam.
The shortage of live pigs is leading to the import of pigs across the border into the Southeast provinces. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a document requesting to rectify this situation. At the same time, due to high demand during Tet, some localities have seen the illegal import of piglets from Thailand.
According to information, the price of piglets in Thailand is about 1.5 million VND/pig (10 kg) cheaper than in Vietnam. Traders illegally import piglets to sell at a price about 200,000 VND/pig lower than the domestic price, causing the risk of spreading disease.
