Rising pork prices bring joy to pig farmers.

STO - From mid-March 2025 to the present, the price of live pigs has increased significantly, bringing great joy to pig farmers in Soc Trang province as it increases their profits. According to many farmers, this year's price of live pigs is higher than the same period last year, ranging from 14,000 to 24,000 VND/kg, bringing in a profit of 2.5 to 4.2 million VND per pig (100kg/pig).

With over 30 years of experience in pig farming, Mr. Pham Van Vu, residing in Tan Hoa C hamlet, Long Hung commune, My Tu district, has a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Mr. Vu shared: "To raise pigs profitably, for many years, I chose to raise breeding sows, usually with two sows. They give birth to two litters per year (over 50 piglets per year). After about a month, the piglets are sold as breeding stock, and about 10 piglets per litter are kept for meat production. Specifically in 2025, the batch of pigs I sold at the end of March was 8 market pigs, priced at 74,000 VND/kg, resulting in a profit of over 32 million VND after deducting expenses. In addition, I also sold 30 wild boars, with a profit of over 2 million VND per boar after deducting expenses. Currently, I am continuing to care for my sow herd, preparing for the next litter this year, and I plan to keep 10 sows for meat production. Because the current price of live pigs is quite good, farmers are making over 30% more profit compared to the same period last year. With the current price of live pigs, I'm confident in my ability to raise them profitably." "I'm sure I'll earn more than 150 million VND per year from selling pork and wild boar."

According to Mr. Vu, to reduce costs, increase profits, and limit common pig diseases, farmers need to build well-ventilated and clean pigpens. Mr. Vu also cooks broken rice mixed with bran to feed the pigs, reducing feed costs, and supplements their diet with vegetables grown around his garden. During hot weather, he provides essential vitamins B1, B6, B12, and C to the pigs.

For over 20 years, despite facing difficulties, Mr. Son Tong, from An Ninh commune, Chau Thanh district, has maintained his pig herd. Mr. Tong said: "I usually raise pigs in 3 batches per year, with 25 pigs per batch. Pigs are ready for market after 3.5 months. To get a good price, I divide the breeding time to sell the pigs around the Lunar New Year or Qingming Festival, when prices are usually higher than usual. For example, during the Qingming Festival in 2025, I sold 10 pigs at 70,000 VND/kg (live weight), making a profit of 4 million VND per pig after deducting expenses."

The total pig population (excluding piglets not yet weaned) in Soc Trang province currently stands at 191,685, an increase of nearly 3% compared to the same period last year (5,257 pigs). Currently, live pig prices are at 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg. However, the number of pigs ready for slaughter is quite low, so many farmers have boldly increased their herds, as the African swine fever situation has significantly improved, with many localities not experiencing a recurrence of the disease for several years.

According to Mr. Dao Van Bay, Deputy Head of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Soc Trang province, the current high price of live pigs has brought good profits to pig farmers. Therefore, to ensure the smooth development of the pig herd amidst the potential risk of African swine fever, pig farmers need to fully vaccinate their pigs against African swine fever and strictly apply biosecurity measures in pig farming such as: regularly cleaning and disinfecting the entire pig farm; controlling and disinfecting transportation vehicles entering and leaving the farm; and regularly using disinfectant solutions on equipment and tools used in pig farming.
