Proactively "retain" students.
At Vinh Thanh Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School (Vinh Thanh commune, Gia Lai province ), where a large number of students are from ethnic minority groups, exam preparation is implemented in a flexible manner, adapted to the actual conditions. Mr. Dang Thanh May, the school's Deputy Principal, said that in the 2025-2026 school year, the school will have 475 students, 99% of whom are Ba Na people, with the remainder being Cham, Dao, and Thai; specifically, there are 95 students in grade 12.
To accurately assess students' abilities, the school has completed the first survey. Based on the score distribution, students are categorized to develop appropriate revision plans. Students at risk receive tutoring and supplementary instruction from teachers. Meanwhile, the group of high-achieving students are reminded not to be complacent and to continue improving their results.
Since students don't live in the dorms but commute daily, their studies are arranged flexibly: regular classes in the morning, review sessions at school in the afternoon, and self-study at home in the evening. To support this self-study process, teachers maintain Zalo groups, ready to answer students' questions.
After the April 30th - May 1st holiday, the school plans to conduct a second assessment to re-evaluate students' abilities, thereby adjusting the content and methods of revision to be more appropriate, aiming for 100% of 12th-grade students to pass their graduation exams.
According to Mr. May, the biggest challenge is the limited socio -economic conditions of the locality, and parents' lack of close attention to their children's education. Therefore, in addition to the school's efforts, the support of the government and the dedication of teachers are essential to empower the students.

At Tran Cao Van No. 1 High School (Quy Nhon ward), exam preparation was implemented early and closely aligned with the students' needs. Mr. Le Van Dung, the school's principal, stated that the school has 1,384 students, including 514 in grade 12. Based on the results of the first mock exam, the school quickly identified students at risk of failing to graduate in order to develop appropriate support plans.
Accordingly, students with weaker academic abilities are given extra tutoring outside of regular school hours, focusing on reinforcing foundational knowledge. Starting in the first week of May, the review plan was implemented simultaneously across the board, with increased study time and individual tutoring for weaker students.
Beyond teaching, the school places special emphasis on managing and monitoring students. In reality, many students have parents working far away and live with their grandparents, making them easily distracted from their studies. Therefore, the school has compiled a detailed list of students' addresses and phone numbers, as well as those of their relatives, to facilitate timely contact when necessary.
“On the day of the exam, if a student is not present at the exam site, the teacher will call them immediately. If necessary, the school's graduation exam support team will go to the student's home to take them to the exam room, preventing them from missing the exam due to carelessness or circumstances,” Mr. Dung said.
From "enough to pass" to "quality to pass"

From a management perspective, Mr. Tran Ba Cong, Deputy Director of the Gia Lai Department of Education and Training, emphasized that improving the quality of the 2026 High School Graduation Examination is a key task for the entire sector. The implementation of the 2018 General Education Program for grade 12 students needs to ensure genuine quality. Simultaneously, teaching, testing, and evaluation methods should be reformed to develop students' qualities and competencies.
The Department of Education and Training requires subject departments to review the curriculum, develop review materials suitable for each group of students, and link teachers' responsibilities to students' learning outcomes. This is considered a key solution to raise the overall average score.
The Gia Lai Education Department aims to maintain the high graduation rate while simultaneously improving the average exam scores by at least four ranks, striving to be ranked 16th out of 34 provinces and cities nationwide.
In the 2025-2026 school year, the province will have 889 12th-grade classes with approximately 35,939 students, of which more than 4,000 are from ethnic minority groups. Given the large scale and regional characteristics, organizing teaching and review sessions in a differentiated, individualized, and career-oriented manner is being identified as a key focus.
In the 2025 high school graduation exam, the entire province achieved a pass rate of 99.32%; however, the average score for all subjects was only 5.97, lower than the national average. This reality highlights the urgent need to shift from the goal of "ensuring a pass rate" to "improving the quality of scores."
