Domestic rice price today May 15, 2025

On May 15, 2025, the domestic rice market recorded a slight increase in rice prices, while the price of glutinous rice tended to decrease. At the same time, in the context of the volatile world market, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast that Vietnam will surpass Thailand, rising to the second position globally in rice exports this year.

In the Mekong Delta, the price of rice and by-products has increased in some varieties. IR 504 raw rice increased by 50 VND/kg, to 8,250 - 8,350 VND/kg. CL 555 rice remained at a high level of 8,600 - 8,900 VND/kg, OM 380 fluctuated at 8,000 - 8,100 VND/kg, and OM 18 continued to stay at 10,200 - 10,400 VND/kg. Jasmine fragrant rice remained at 17,000 - 18,000 VND/kg.

In areas such as An Giang, Lap Vo (Dong Thap), Sa Dec and Cai Be ( Tien Giang ), the transaction volume is still sluggish. Good rice is bought regularly, the price tends to increase slightly, especially the price of fragrant raw rice increases by 50 - 100 VND/kg. However, in general, the transaction is still slow, especially for Summer-Autumn rice.

In retail markets, the price of finished rice is quite stable. Fragrant rice is commonly priced at 18,000 - 22,000 VND/kg, regular rice is 15,000 - 16,000 VND/kg. Thai fragrant rice and Huong Lai rice remain at around 20,000 - 22,000 VND/kg. Nang Nhen rice remains at the highest level, 28,000 VND/kg.

In contrast to rice prices, the price of glutinous rice decreased. IR 4625 (dry) decreased by VND100/kg to VND9,700 - VND9,900/kg. Meanwhile, other types of fresh and dry glutinous rice remained stable at VND7,700 - VND8,000/kg.

By-product prices also fluctuated significantly. OM 5451 broken rice increased by 50 VND/kg, reaching 7,400 - 7,500 VND/kg. Notably, the price of bran - a product used in animal husbandry - increased sharply by 250 VND/kg, reaching 7,500 - 7,600 VND/kg. Rice husks remained at a low level, from 1,000 - 1,150 VND/kg.

Regarding rice prices, the Summer-Autumn market is not yet active. Records in Can Tho, An Giang, Tien Giang, Kien Giang and Long An show that the harvest is still small, trading is slow, and prices are relatively stable. Specifically, the price of IR 50404 rice fluctuates between 5,400 and 5,600 VND/kg; OM 5451 from 6,000 to 6,200 VND/kg; OM 380 at 5,500 to 5,800 VND/kg. OM 18 (fresh), Dai Thom 8 (fresh), and Nang Hoa 9 rice continue to be stable at around 6,550 to 7,000 VND/kg.

Rice prices continue to fall, experts comment on rice export prospects in 2025

World rice price today May 15, 2025

In the export market, Vietnam's rice prices remained stable as of May 14. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), 5% broken rice was offered at $397 per ton, $13 lower than the same type of rice from Thailand but $8 to $16 higher than that of India and Pakistan. 25% broken rice was priced at $368 per ton, $17 lower than Thailand but still $3 to $11 higher than India and Pakistan. 100% broken rice remained at $321 per ton, $26 lower than Thailand and equivalent to Pakistan.

In the latest report of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Vietnam is forecast to surpass Thailand to rise to second place in the world in rice exports in 2025. Vietnam is expected to export about 7.9 million tons of rice, while Thailand will reach 7 million tons.

India continues to lead with 24 million tonnes. Vietnam’s export growth is mainly due to stable demand in traditional markets such as the Philippines, along with the return of imports from China – a major partner in recent years.

Notably, Vietnam is also expected to become the second largest rice importer in the world by 2025. Rice imports are expected to reach 4 million tons in 2025 and increase to 4.1 million tons in 2026, compared to 3.4 million tons in 2024. This increase is explained by the decrease in domestic cultivation area and the strong increase in import demand from Cambodia.

The Philippines remains the world's largest rice importer with about 5.5 million tonnes, followed by Nigeria with 3 million tonnes, China with 2.4 million tonnes, the EU with 2.2 million tonnes and Indonesia with 800,000 tonnes.

Although global rice production is forecast to increase by 1 million tonnes this year to 538.7 million tonnes, the shortage remains unaddressed as demand surges to 538.8 million tonnes.

In that context, Vietnam not only affirms its position as a major exporting country but also stands out as a strategic importer, demonstrating flexible and proactive adaptation to fluctuations in the global rice market.
