On April 16, the domestic rice market recorded mixed developments. Rice prices tended to increase slightly, while rice prices decreased for some varieties. Dry rice consumption was slow, traders still offered regular sales but the amount purchased from warehouses was not much.
In the Mekong Delta region, fresh rice prices fluctuated depending on the type. Specifically, OM 18 and OM 380 increased by VND 100/kg, while OM 5451 decreased by VND 100/kg. Other types such as Dai Thom 8, IR 50404 and Nang Hoa 9 remained stable at around VND 5,800 - 7,000/kg depending on the type.
Trading activities in many provinces such as An Giang, Can Tho, Long An or Bac Lieu are generally still slow. Supply in Kien Giang has begun to decrease, while in Bac Lieu, ST rice prices are kept high thanks to large areas that have been reserved, but traders are not buying much.
Regarding raw rice, some types such as IR 504 increased slightly by 50 VND/kg, while OM 380 decreased by the same amount. Finished rice products remained stable, with prices ranging from 8,800 - 9,700 VND/kg depending on the type.
The price of by-products such as broken rice and bran ranges from 6,600 to 9,000 VND/kg. Of which, broken rice 3-4 is commonly priced around 6,800 VND/kg, while bran peaks at 9,000 VND/kg.
At retail markets, prices of popular rice varieties remained almost unchanged. Fragrant rice, specialty rice and Japanese rice remained high, ranging from VND18,000 to VND28,000 per kilogram, while common rice varieties were priced at VND15,500 to VND17,000 per kilogram. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam's export rice prices currently range from 317 to 397 USD/ton depending on the type. 100% broken rice is priced at 317 USD/ton, 25% broken rice is 370 USD/ton and 5% broken rice is 397 USD/ton. According to information from the Vietnam Trade Office in the Philippines, the country's demand for rice imports will continue to increase in early 2025. Domestic rice prices in the Philippines remain high, while domestic supply is unstable. Although the government has taken many measures to control prices and ensure food security, the market still has many potential risks.
In this context, Vietnam's role is increasingly affirmed. Vietnam currently accounts for 80 to 85% of the Philippines' total rice imports, and is expected to export about 4.35 million tons of rice to this market in 2025. Vietnamese rice is popular thanks to its reasonable price, stable quality, favorable trade and good trade relations between the two countries.
Since the beginning of this year, the Philippines has imposed a retail price ceiling of 58 pesos per kilogram of rice to curb inflation. In February, the country declared a state of emergency on food security to increase its ability to intervene in the market. However, these measures are considered temporary and not very effective.
