Latest rice export prices as of May 28th.
On the export market, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of Vietnamese Jasmine rice continues to remain stable at 528-532 USD/ton, fragrant rice with 5% broken grains at 505-520 USD/ton, and white rice with 5% broken grains at 412-416 USD/ton.
In Thailand, the asking price for 5% broken white rice ranges from US$440 to US$444 per ton – the highest among leading rice exporting countries. Meanwhile, the same product from Pakistan ranges from US$347 to US$351 per ton. In India, the price of 5% broken white rice remains stable at US$342 to US$346 per ton, while parboiled 5% broken rice reaches US$332 to US$336 per ton.
Escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia are dealing a severe blow to India's key agricultural export sector. According to data from the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), the country's rice exports in April plummeted by 6% compared to the same period last year, falling to $1.01 billion.
At the heart of this downturn is the premium Basmati rice market. The constant blockade or threat to vital shipping lanes through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz has driven sea freight costs to the Gulf region skyrocketing to $5,000 per container since March 2026 – a tenfold increase from previous prices. As a result, profit margins have eroded, while trade with major Basmati consuming markets like Iran and Saudi Arabia has been completely disrupted. A report from the Agro-Produced Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) shows that rice exports to the Gulf region have plummeted by 49% in the 2026 fiscal year.
Here are some of the recorded export prices for Vietnamese rice:
| Type of rice for export | Price (USD/ton) |
|---|---|
| Fragrant rice with 5% broken grains | 500 - 520 |
| White rice with 5% broken grains | 412 - 416 |
| Jasmine fragrant rice | 528 - 532 |
| Sticky rice | 600 - 620 |
Rice price forecast
Today, May 28, 2026, rice prices in the Mekong Delta and nationwide remain stable. Export rice prices continue to stay high, especially for Vietnamese fragrant rice with 5% broken grains and Jasmine rice. Demand in the export market remains high, but domestic trading activity is not yet truly vibrant due to farmers' tendency to hold onto prices.
On the domestic market, the price of 5% broken white rice increased by approximately $30 per ton in just one week, indicating that upward price pressure is spreading from the raw material stage to exports.
Investors are currently closely monitoring the possibility of Iraq returning to large-scale rice purchases. If new orders emerge while Thai supplies remain unchanged, prices could continue to rise sharply in the third quarter. With India maintaining export controls on certain rice varieties and extreme weather increasing in Asia, the global rice market is entering a much more sensitive phase than at the beginning of the year.
With domestic production projected to reach record highs, Indonesia has decided not to grant import quotas in 2026, causing Vietnamese rice exports to the country to decrease by 73%.
