USD exchange rate on international market
The Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the strength of the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recorded 106.4, up 0.26% compared to December 10, 2024.
The dollar rose in the last trading session, ahead of the release of US inflation data that could influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy plans. Analysts are also watching for the impact of President-elect Donald Trump's policy commitments as he prepares to begin his second term next month.
Accordingly, Mr. Trump announced that he would apply a 25% tax on imported goods from Mexico and Canada as soon as he took office, in order to deal with illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US.
Money markets are currently pricing in an 86% chance that the Fed will cut interest rates by 25 basis points next week. However, investors are still closely watching consumer price index (CPI) data, due to be released on December 11, to gauge the impact of Fed policy.
“The market is concerned that strong inflation data could make the Fed more hawkish. We want to see if this CPI information changes the Fed’s mind at the December meeting. By now, a 25bp cut is almost certain,” said Brad Bechtel, global head of FX at Jefferies.
Meanwhile, the US dollar rose 0.47% to 151.925 yen in trading.
Investors made few large trades ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) policy meeting.
The ECB is expected to cut interest rates by 25 basis points, but markets are focused on signals of further adjustments from the agency.
In contrast, the EUR fell 0.27% to $1.0526.
