Durian news today 5/17/2025

A report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shows that by the end of April 2025, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached 1.62 billion USD, down 14% over the same period last year. Notably, the export value of durian only reached 130 million USD, much lower than the 500 million USD of the same period last year...

According to the latest data, in early May, the price of durian purchased by warehouses at some gardens in the Mekong Delta and the Southeast decreased by more than 50% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the project to develop key fruit trees shows that by 2030, the whole country will have 65,000 - 75,000 hectares of durian growing area. However, by last year, our country had 160,000 hectares, which is double the increase and the process of increasing the area has not shown any signs of stopping. The overheated development of durian growing area is also one of the reasons leading to the situation where durian prices will no longer be as high as before, purchasing power will decrease due to oversupply.

Faced with the current situation of durians contaminated with the banned substances yellow O and cadmium, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also requested localities to restructure the durian industry towards sustainability, encourage the development of deeply processed product lines, especially frozen durian, to increase added value and reduce dependence on the fresh market. However, the most important thing is to develop a quality control and food safety program for exported durians as well as develop and issue circulars guiding the process and procedures for granting codes for growing areas and packaging facilities.

Up to now, Vietnam has 9 laboratories for testing yellow O in durian recognized by China. But the number is still not enough to meet the demand. It is necessary to have more laboratories for testing durian quality to be able to more strictly control the quality before exporting, minimizing the situation of vehicles returning to the border gate to sell at rescue prices in the country.
