Tien Giang actively controls Cadmium on durian trees
In addition to price fluctuations, the issue of durian quality – especially the risk of cadmium contamination – is becoming the focus of concern for the agricultural sector. On the afternoon of June 17, a working group from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment led by Deputy Minister Hoang Trung conducted a field survey in Cai Lay district, Tien Giang.
Here, the delegation inspected two Cadmium contamination treatment models implemented by gardeners Tran The Bay and Ngo Van Tang in Long Trung commune. Each model has a scale of 0.5 hectares, simultaneously applying the following measures: using Cadmium-free fertilizer, adding mint, microbial products, combining biochar and lime.
After more than 4 months of implementation, some measures such as using lime and cadmium-free fertilizers have initially shown clear effectiveness – cadmium levels on leaves, soil and water have decreased significantly. The remaining solutions are still in the evaluation stage.
Deputy Minister Hoang Trung highly appreciated the efforts of people, businesses and functional agencies of Tien Giang province in proactively preventing and controlling cadmium pollution - which is a potential cause of agricultural products being returned when exported.
He emphasized that this is a model that needs to be replicated and closely monitored. If it achieves stable results, it will open up a new direction to help the Vietnamese durian industry better meet the technical requirements of import markets, especially China and the EU.
Towards clean and sustainable production and maintaining the Vietnamese fruit brand
The fact that durian prices continued to remain low in mid-June 2025 put a lot of pressure on growers and traders. However, in the context of increasingly fierce competition in the international market, product quality is the core factor to increase value and expand the consumption market.
Efforts such as the Cadmium control model in Tien Giang are demonstrating the determination to build a clean, sustainable production system that meets international standards. If replicated and supported by policies, this could be the “key” for Vietnamese durian to reach further on the global fruit export map.
