Singapore is preparing for a durian price reduction, what opportunities are there for Vietnam?
According to Channel News Asia (CNA), the durian market in Singapore may see a sharp drop in prices in July, coinciding with the peak harvest period in Malaysia and parts of Vietnam.
Tan Wei, a durian shop owner in Singapore, predicts that prices could fall by up to 25% as supplies increase. However, he warns that unpredictable weather or logistical issues could disrupt the trend. “Early in the season, production is limited, so prices are still high. But when the season peaks, prices will cool down significantly,” said Tan. His shop mainly imports premium varieties such as Musang King from Johor, Malaysia, a region known for producing some of the region’s best-quality durians.
Another business, Durian Haven, also said that the durian season will peak around July and August, with production surging. During this period, the Bugis store can sell more than 15 boxes of durians a day. However, store manager Lim Mei said that price competition is likely to occur, although they are still focused on ensuring the quality of the fruit and the customer experience.
Vietnam faces opportunities and challenges from the durian market
Currently, Vietnam is in the main harvest season, with key provinces such as Dak Lak , Lam Dong, Tien Giang and Vinh Long contributing large output. If exports to major markets such as China and Singapore go smoothly, the price of grade 1 durian may remain high, while the price of durian bought in bulk is likely to increase slightly.
However, Vietnam is facing fierce competition from durian from Thailand and Malaysia, especially when the seasons in Southeast Asia overlap. Maintaining stable prices over the long term remains a challenge.
Furthermore, climate change is affecting harvest time and fruit quality, requiring Vietnamese farmers and businesses to flexibly adjust their business strategies to adapt to market fluctuations.
