Durian price today 256 Sharp decrease due to heavy rain causing fruit to freeze

Meanwhile, the durian market in the Central Highlands is witnessing the sharpest price drop since the beginning of the season. Prolonged heavy rains have caused many durian orchards to wither before they have had time to grow, causing serious damage to growers. A series of traders have proactively waived their deposits and refused to purchase shipments showing signs of defects.

According to records, the price of selected Thai durian is from 80,000 - 82,000 VND/kg; Thai durian bought in bulk: 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg; selected RI6 durian: 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg; RI6 in bulk: 25,000 - 28,000 VND/kg

However, in reality, the garden still records significantly lower transaction prices, especially for lots with a low percentage of "sầu" (hardwood) trees.

Currently, Thai durian, Musang King and RI6 in some beautiful gardens are still purchased at 60,000 VND/kg, 55,000 VND/kg and 50,000 VND/kg respectively. However, if only a small part of the lot is found to have unripe fruit, traders will immediately push the price down to 25,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, and some households even accept to sell at 17,000 VND/kg to avoid losing everything.

A trader in Dak Lak said: “Flawed goods cannot be exported, and when they are collected, they can only be thrown away. Losing a deposit of tens of millions is better than holding a ton of defective goods.”

Locals believe that selling prices below 40,000 VND/kg are already a loss, due to the increasing cost of investment and care. When the price drops to 17,000 VND/kg, each ton of durian is considered a total loss of money for seeds, fertilizers, and care.
