Steel price today 5/5: Decrease on the trading floor

On May 5, the domestic market kept its selling price unchanged; steel bars remained near the lowest level in 7 months.

Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery fell 18 yuan to 3,119 yuan a tonne.

China’s rebar futures were at 3,050 yuan a tonne, trading in a narrow range since a seven-month low of 3,017 yuan on April 22, as lower trade flows dampened the outlook for demand for the ferrous metal.

China's manufacturing unexpectedly contracted in April, as a tariff exchange between Beijing and Washington sent export orders falling to their lowest in more than two years, the NBS PMI showed.

Poor consumer sentiment has raised the risk that property prices could fall further and kept pressure on the balance sheets of debt-laden developers, putting them at risk of liquidation and eliminating a major source of demand for global rebar.

Adding to the downward pressure on prices, China’s crude steel output rose 3.6% year-on-year to 93 million tonnes in March, despite Beijing signaling it would cut capacity.
