The amount of cryptocurrency stolen in cyberattacks globally more than doubled in the first six months of 2024 compared to a year earlier, largely due to rising cryptocurrency prices.

A report by blockchain research firm TRM Labs released on July 5 said that hackers stole the number Cryptocurrency worth more than $1.38 billion as of June 24, 2024, compared with $657 million in the same period in 2023.
The report also showed that the average number of thefts was one and a half times higher than the previous year.
“While we haven’t seen any fundamental changes in the security of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, we have seen a significant increase in the value of many different virtual currencies — from bitcoin to ETH (ether) and Solana — compared to the same period last year,” said Ari Redbord, global policy director at TRM Labs.
This means cybercriminals have more incentive to attack cryptocurrency services and can steal larger amounts, Mr. Redbord added.
Cryptocurrency prices have generally recovered from their lows in late 2022 following the collapse of the FTX crypto exchange. Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $73,803.25 in March of this year.
Companies Cryptocurrency are frequent targets of cyberattacks. Among the biggest cryptocurrency thefts so far this year was the theft of a massive amount of bitcoin worth about $308 million from Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin.
Mr. Redbord also said that the volume of stolen cryptocurrencies in 2022 was about $900 million, of which more than $600 million was stolen from the blockchain network related to the online game Axie Infinity.
