During the Vallet Scholarship Award Ceremony for the 2021-2022 academic year, Mr. Van shared impressively with outstanding Vietnamese students. Along with his messages, he also suggested to the younger generation about "a special year of basic science ".
At the beginning of his speech, Mr. Van said he was very happy and moved that after 3 years of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he now had the opportunity to meet again with the faces of outstanding Vietnamese students.
“This year is a very special year,” said Van, a physics PhD who was awarded the Tate Medal of the American Physical Society. “The United Nations has declared 2022-2023 as the year of basic science for sustainable development.”
“What is basic science? Basic science is based on curiosity, the search for truth. Curiosity and inquiry - that is the foundation ofeducation , the source of discovery. Discovery will turn into applications that can serve sustainable, comprehensive development,” Mr. Van shared, while noting the need to promote basic science in a spirit of cooperation and openness.
For the excellent students, Mr. Van also had some "special" messages during his journey across Vietnam to award scholarships this year. He said: "We hope that the scholarships you receive today will be an encouragement. This scholarship will connect you to fly higher and further on the path of education. We really hope that you will fly higher and further than us - those who went before, to become successful so that you can serve the country in the future."
In addition, Mr. Van also sent his thanks to the teachers. He said: “We also thank the teachers who have sacrificed a lot of time to teach the children. Without the teachers, the children would not have the love of science and the openness to accept new things.”
Mr. Van shared the above at the Vallet scholarship award ceremony of the scientific and educational organization Rencontres du Vietnam on the morning of August 29 in Ho Chi Minh City. Continuously since 2001, this scholarship has granted over 50,000 scholarships worth around 350 billion VND. In 2022, the value of the scholarship for students is 26 million VND/scholarship and the scholarship for pupils is 13 million VND/scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by the Vallet Foundation of Mr. Odon Vallet (former professor of Sorbonne University Paris) and the Vallet family.
