Border schools proactively prevent small things

Faced with the complicated developments of typhoon Kajiki, the Ha Tinh Department of Education and schools have simultaneously activated response plans, focusing on reinforcing facilities, evacuating assets, and being ready to protect the safety of students and teachers before the new school year.

Teachers of Son Hong Primary and Secondary School proactively prepare for storms.

At Son Hong Primary and Secondary School, teachers and staff were present early in the morning to carry out storm prevention work. The old trees in the campus were trimmed and securely tied; the corrugated iron roofs of the classrooms were reinforced with braces; glass and wooden doors were tightly closed and carefully bolted. The school yard became neater and safer after only a few hours of urgent work.

The school is located in a valley, and is affected by whirlwinds all year round, especially in the summer when the winds can blow off the roof. More worryingly, if the rain reaches 500-600 mm, the risk of flash floods is completely possible. Therefore, proactive disaster prevention in Son Hong must never be neglected.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school has 530 students in 18 classes, from grades 1 to 9, and 29 teachers. The school board has coordinated with local authorities to review landslide-prone areas, especially near residential areas where students live. Maps of vulnerable locations have been clearly delineated so that if an emergency occurs, local forces can evacuate and provide immediate support.

In addition to taking care of classrooms and schools, local authorities also require parents to sign a commitment to coordinate management and keep their children safe during the storm. “Students are the number one priority. Every teacher considers protecting the safety of students as protecting their own children. We have a 4-on-the-spot spirit so as not to be passive in any situation,” affirmed Mr. Tran Duc Dan - Principal of the school.

Student safety comes first

Also in an urgent mood, at Cam Due Primary School, teachers and staff were mobilized to the maximum to ensure facilities. The school has a total of 750 students, a large number so storm prevention work requires careful preparation. Records, documents, machines, and teaching equipment were all moved from the first floor to the second floor to avoid flooding. Trees around the school yard were trimmed and cleaned to reduce the risk of falling in strong winds.

Televisions, equipment, and teaching aids have been moved to higher ground by teachers at Cam Due Primary School to ensure they are not damaged by storms.

Unlike Son Hong and Cam Due, Xuan Yen Primary School is located close to the sea, facing strong winds when the storm hits. With 491 students, teachers here understand the need for “prevention is better than cure”.

Over the past two days, the school has simultaneously implemented measures: securing and securing trees; removing banners and slogans welcoming the new school year to avoid being blown away by the wind; and moving all important documents and teaching equipment to a safe place.

According to Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Giang - Principal, the school was built in 1994, although it has been renovated many times, but every time there is news of a storm, the school is always worried. "But the biggest concern is not the facilities, but the safety of nearly 500 students. Therefore, we determined to do everything carefully from the smallest step, not letting any incident threaten the students," Ms. Giang shared.

Faced with the complicated developments of storm Kajiki, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh has issued a document directing educational units to proactively let students stay home from school to respond to the storm.

Following the direction of the province and the education sector, schools have also announced to class groups and parent groups about the school closure to prevent storms.

Accordingly, more than 67,000 students in grades 1, 9 and 12 in Ha Tinh will be off school for 2 days, from Monday (August 25) to Tuesday (August 26). Depending on the weather, the school will have a new announcement.

At the same time, educational institutions need to increase dissemination of disaster risk prevention skills to students and parents. Units must also maintain contact with parents and promptly report to the Department when incidents occur to minimize risks.
