Jumping into a 35-meter deep well to save his daughter, Dang Bao Duy suffered a fractured shoulder and cervical vertebrae.

On May 18, Gia Lai General Hospital announced that the health of patient Dang Bao Duy (40 years old, living on Ly Nam De Street, Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province), the father who jumped into a deep well to save his daughter a day ago, is stable and recovering well.

Patient Duy suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured shoulder and cervical vertebrae. He had to use a splint to stabilize himself and needed to be treated for a period of time in the hospital.

It is known that Mr. Duy's daughter, Dang LL (9 years old), broke her femur when she fell into the well and had surgery at Gia Lai Provincial Children's Hospital. Currently, her health and mental state are stable.

After nearly 120 minutes of “life and death” struggle, Mr. Dang Bao Duy is still in shock. Mr. Duy said that at around 1:30 pm on May 17, his family was holding a memorial service. Suddenly, he heard a loud scream from behind the house, he ran out and discovered his daughter had fallen into the well.

“I rushed like a machine. The well was behind the kitchen, an area where few people passed by. The wall of the well was about 80 cm high and covered. When I arrived, I saw that the auxiliary cover was slightly askew. I stuck my head down the well and called out, 'Where is my child?' Then from the bottom of the well came a weak reply, 'Here I am, Dad, save me.' Hearing my child calling for help, my heart felt like it was being squeezed. At that moment, I didn't have time to think, I quickly grabbed the rope on the mouth of the well and jumped down to save my child,” said Duy.

After going down about 20 meters, the rope suddenly broke. To save his son, Duy leaned against the wall of the well, kicked both sides to go down slowly, and at the same time guided his son to avoid being crushed if he fell.

While jumping into the well, Mr. Duy was continuously hit against the well wall and injured, but seeing his daughter struggling, he quickly hugged her and calmed her down.

"I said, 'Dad is here, it's okay son. Luckily, the water level in the well was over 1 meter so we escaped,'" Duy recounted.

Mr. Dang Bao Duy was brought out of the deep well by rescuers with multiple injuries.

At the same time, at the mouth of the well, Duy’s family was struggling to find a way to rescue the father and son trapped in the well. Many people tried to go down the well but had to come up immediately because they were suffocating due to lack of oxygen, the space was pitch black, and they had to wait for the authorities.

While waiting, the family used a large plastic pipe and turned on the fan to blow air down to the bottom of the deep well.

In the first 30 minutes, Duy and his father gradually fell into a mental crisis. When the oxygen in the well began to run out, both father and son began to feel drowsy and unconscious.

In that life-and-death moment, Mr. Duy tried to hold his daughter on his neck to get more oxygen and encouraged her to breathe evenly to stay alive.

"For nearly two hours in the well, I thought of the worst. But when I heard my daughter crying, I tried to hold on, not letting myself lose consciousness to protect her. I felt very happy that both father and daughter were safe," Duy shared.

Rescuers lowered oxygen tanks into the well to keep the victim alive and sent a rescue team down the well to bring the person up safely.

After receiving the news, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department of Gia Lai Province mobilized 17 officers and soldiers along with many vehicles to quickly arrive at the scene to rescue the victims.

The rescue team calmed the victims and lowered oxygen tanks into the well to keep them alive. At the same time, a rescue team used gas masks and flashlights to go down the well to bring the victims up.

At 3:25 p.m. the same day, rescuers brought the two victims safely to the ground and handed them over to medical staff for first aid.

"When the rescue team approached, I put a rope around me, hugged my daughter tightly to be brought to the ground safely. Thinking back now, I feel it was too dangerous. But as a father, hearing my daughter cry for help, I couldn't wait. If I had been a little slower, there might not have been a chance to save my daughter anymore," Duy said emotionally.

Mr. Dang Le Anh Du (born in 1997, Mr. Duy's younger brother) said that when his brother and niece's lives were in danger, a soldier was sent down the well, but because the well was too narrow and he was carrying a lot of rescue equipment, he got stuck and could not reach the two victims, so he had to pull them up. At that time, the family was very worried.

"The rescue was successful when the rescue team decided to send the smallest person down the well," said Mr. Du, adding that his brother and the baby were brought safely to the surface from the bottom of the 35-meter-deep well. The family was very moved and grateful to the rescue team.
