The Hmong chicken breed adapts well to the climate conditions in Quang Ngai , opening up a new direction for breeders.
In September 2023, the Agricultural Service Center of Tu Nghia District (Quang Ngai) implemented the transfer of the model of raising commercial H'Mong chickens (also known as black chickens) to a number of households in Nghia Thuan Commune (Tu Nghia District). Accordingly, each participating household will be supported with 50% of the breed, 50% of the feed and will be instructed on care techniques. The scale of implementation is 300 chickens/household with a total cost of 15 million VND/household.

After more than 3 months of implementation, the model is showing positive signs when the chickens are adapted to local climate conditions, grow and develop well, and are less susceptible to diseases. Mr. Vo Thanh Quang (residing in My Thanh Dong village), one of the households participating in the model, said that in the commune, this is a relatively new breed of chicken, originating from the North. Therefore, when registering to implement, he was somewhat skeptical about the breed's suitability to the weather in the Central region.
However, through monitoring, Mr. Quang found that the H'Mong chicken breed has very good resistance, when cared for according to the correct technical process, the loss rate is very low compared to other chicken breeds. Up to now, his family's chicken flock has reached an average weight of 1.3 - 1.5k/chicken, and in about 1 month they can be sold. "From this initial effectiveness, in the coming time, I will invest in more barns, expand the scale of raising H'Mong chickens to increase family income," Mr. Quang shared.
Similarly, taking advantage of the vacant land in the pig farm, Mr. Pham The My (residing in Phu Thuan village) also registered to participate in the model, raising 300 commercial H'Mong chickens. According to Mr. My, this breed of chicken is very easy to care for, takes advantage of local agricultural food sources, and has firm, delicious meat, so the selling price is also higher than traditional local chicken breeds.
“Other free-range chicken breeds on the market today are priced from 100,000 to 120,000 VND/kg, while H'Mong chickens are being sold for 120,000 to 140,000 VND/kg. My family's chickens will be sold around Tet so the price will probably be even higher. This Tet, my family will have a good additional income from this chicken farming model,” said Mr. My.
According to the Agricultural Service Center of Tu Nghia district, H'Mong chicken is a breed of chicken with a black body, black feathers, black legs, black comb, black meat and black bones. This is a breed of chicken that is very easy to raise, has good resistance to the environment and diseases. Like other poultry breeds, H'Mong chickens in the chick stage need to be carefully cared for, ensuring temperature and keeping the chickens warm.
The main food sources for chickens are rice, corn, bran, green vegetables, natural grass, etc. available locally, helping people reduce feed costs, bringing high economic value. H'Mong chicken meat is firm, delicious, has high nutritional value, and is used both as food and as a valuable folk medicine. This is considered one of the precious commercial chicken breeds, favored by many people.
Mr. Ton Long Can, Director of Tu Nghia District Agricultural Service Center, said that since it was the first year of testing, the unit selected households with sufficient conditions in terms of materials, labor, and grazing areas for support. Through monitoring the raising process, this breed of chicken had a very low loss rate, about 6%. Along with the high commercial value, it can be seen that the model was initially very successful.
