Lychee originated from Phan Sao Nam commune, Phu Cu, Hung Yen , then propagated and grown in many neighboring communes.
Recently, images of large lychees appeared on social media, surprising many people. According to the statistics, lychees are only as big as a chicken egg.
It is known that this is egg lychee, grown a lot in Hung Yen.
This lychee variety has been around for a long time, but in recent years, when better growing technologies were applied, the lychee tree produced more and larger fruits, making the egg lychee stand out more on the market.
Lychee originated from Phan Sao Nam commune, Phu Cu, Hung Yen, then propagated and grown in many neighboring communes.
When ripe, Hung Yen lychee has a beautiful bright red color, large fruit, thick flesh, sweet taste and attractive aroma.
The price of Hung Yen lychee purchased at the garden ranges from 60,000-100,000 VND/kg. When brought to other places, due to additional transportation and preservation costs, the price of lychee is higher.
In Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong , grade 1 Hung Yen lychee retails for around 230,000-240,000 VND/kg. In Hanoi, this type of lychee is being sold at many stores for 185,000-195,000 VND/kg.
According to locals, lychee this year will "sell out" early due to lower output compared to last year.
Hung Yen lychee weighs about 18 fruits/kg, the exceptionally large fruit weighs only 12-13 fruits/kg while normal lychee weighs 28-30 fruits/kg.
Lychees as big as a human hand, as seen in the pictures circulating online, are quite rare. They could be a few of the biggest fruits picked from the whole tree or garden.
From the beginning of May, Hung Yen egg lychee begins to be harvested. Egg lychee after harvest can be left in the wild for 3-4 days and still retains its original color and flavor. Photo source: Facebook
