Keeping weapons and equipment 'alive'

Training and skill assessment activities have become a regular practice in the Logistics and Technical sector of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Military Command. Through these activities, from repair technicians and ordnance maintenance personnel to military vehicle drivers, everyone regularly updates their knowledge and practices handling technical situations relevant to their assigned tasks.

Amidst the scorching early summer sun at the unit's repair and maintenance station, the roar of engines and the rhythmic sounds of mechanical tools emanated from under the stiflingly hot shelters.

Groups of technicians bent over military vehicles, carefully inspecting every detail of the engine, braking system, electrical system, and coolant. In the weapons storage area, infantry rifles were disassembled and reassembled according to procedure, meticulously cleaned under the warm yellow light shining down on the workbenches.

The Provincial Military Command regularly inspects and handles technical issues related to the umbrellas for the technical staff at the unit.

Sweat soaked their shirts, their hands were greasy, but every action was performed precisely, rhythmically, and in accordance with technical regulations. For these soldier-technicians, the training, refresher courses, and skill assessments are not only about evaluating professional competence, but also an opportunity to hone their skills in a formal environment, enhance their professional capabilities, and maintain the technical readiness of weapons, equipment, and vehicles in the face of increasingly demanding missions.

At the General Maintenance and Repair Station, Major Nguyen Quang Dong, a professional military officer and employee of the General Repair Station, Logistics and Technical Department of the Provincial Military Command, attentively observed the practical operations of the young technicians while sharing: "Having been involved in the repair of military equipment and vehicles for over twenty years, I understand that caution is a mandatory requirement for a technical soldier. Technical work does not allow for complacency, even in the smallest detail."

"Organizing annual training and skills tests is an opportunity for officers and soldiers to review their knowledge and acquire new skills, especially in practical areas. Technical work requires solid skills and a thorough understanding of procedures, because even small mistakes can directly affect safety when performing tasks," added Nguyen Quang Dong.

Not only mechanics, but also military drivers consider training and skill assessments as mandatory requirements to improve their overall competence. Under outdoor temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius, military vehicles undergo thorough technical inspections before deployment. Drivers not only sit behind the wheel but must also directly detect malfunctions and handle technical situations that arise during marches.

Captain To Ngoc Tung, a professional military officer, said: "The job of a military driver is much more stressful than that of a regular driver because of the diverse tasks, including long journeys, harsh weather conditions, or maneuvering in complex situations. Therefore, in addition to safe driving skills, a thorough understanding of vehicle mechanics is a mandatory requirement. Each inspection and training session helps us develop better reflexes in handling situations, minimizing incidents while on duty."

The training and skills assessment process at the Provincial Military Command demonstrated a high level of professionalism and rigor in every aspect. From lesson plans and materials to practice areas and study and living arrangements, everything was strictly maintained. Trainees took thorough notes, followed technical procedures correctly, and performed each step consistently. The judging panels closely monitored the practical sessions, accurately assessing each individual's skill level.

Major Luong Vu Linh, Deputy Head of Logistics and Technical Services, Provincial Military Command, stated: "The unique characteristic of technical work is the requirement for very high accuracy and safety. Organizing training and skill testing is crucial in improving the quality of technical personnel, contributing to ensuring the proper maintenance of weapons and equipment for training, combat readiness, and unexpected missions. Therefore, we always emphasize that technical training must be closely linked to the unit's actual tasks."

In addition to strengthening specialized knowledge, the unit is gradually promoting the application of science and technology and digital transformation in technical management, vehicle and equipment record management, materials, and supplies, in order to improve management efficiency and technical assurance quality.

In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, today's technical soldiers are not only highly skilled but also proactive in embracing new technologies. This is especially true for equipment management software, the digitization of technical records, and the updating of vehicle status using electronic data, which are being implemented at the facility. This helps to make monitoring, maintenance, and repair work more scientific, and allows for the timely detection of potential technical safety risks.

Behind the safe vehicles on every road, and the always well-maintained firearms, lies the silent dedication of the soldier-mechanics... And from those rigorous training and skill assessments, the technical staff of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Military Command continues to accumulate experience, improve their professional skills, maintain the "lifeline" of weapons and technical equipment, and contribute to building an increasingly regular, elite, and modern armed force.
