The project “Enhancing economic empowerment for disadvantaged youth in Lai Chau” organized by Plan International in Lai Chau region has organized training programs, supported seedlings, farming techniques and applied economic models to adapt to climate change... Through that, many ethnic minority youth in Lai Chau province have gradually changed their thinking, improved their livelihoods and increased their income.

For example, the models of growing passion fruit, raising chickens, raising bees... in Dao San and Khong Lao communes are showing clear effectiveness, becoming a new development direction for highland youth.

Participating in the beekeeping model helps ethnic minority youth improve their income and stabilize their lives.

Mr. Cu A Chinh, a resident of Si Phai village, Dao San commune, shared: “Previously, my family only grew cassava, which was cheap and had low income. Some years, there was not enough labor to harvest. Thanks to participating in the passion fruit growing project, I was able to study the model and receive support for seeds and techniques. After six months of caring for 160 passion fruit trees according to instructions, my family has now harvested the first crop, earning 7 million VND. With an area of land to grow 160 passion fruit trees, if there are three crops each year, the income is 4-5 times higher than growing cassava."

Similarly, Vang Thi Hoa, born in 2005 in Den Thang B village, got married and had a child when she was only 15 years old. After experiencing difficulties in making a living after having a family, Hoa was informed and encouraged to participate in the project and was supported with plants and seedlings, and trained in content related to personal economic development. “I was guided in making a financial plan, learning techniques for planting trees and taking care of livestock. Before, when growing chayote, each harvest had to be brought to Muong So, 35km away, to sell for 150,000 VND. Now, growing passion fruit and raising chickens gives me a more stable income. I hope to continue receiving support to expand the passion fruit area and the scale of the barn to develop the economy and raise my children to study,” Hoa shared.

Ethnic minority youth learn about family financial planning; introduction to value chains, product analysis, and learning about marketing and sales.

According to Mr. Vuong Bien Thuy, Head of the Department of Culture and Society of Dao San commune: “When implementing the passion fruit development model in the area, many people were initially skeptical about the feasibility of the model. However, after nearly a year of implementation, many households have had a fairly stable source of income. The most important thing is that young people have changed their awareness and production thinking, no longer depending on and waiting for their parents, but being independent and proactive in finding ways to make a living. Many people have even volunteered to learn and follow even though they are not in the category of those receiving support."

In addition to Dao San commune, the project "Enhancing economic empowerment for disadvantaged youth in Lai Chau" has also been implemented in many communes such as Khong Lao, Sin Suoi Ho... Thousands of ethnic minority youth have participated in training courses, seminars, and visits to learn about sustainable agricultural models.

Up to now, tens of thousands of seedlings, dozens of tons of organic microbial fertilizers... have been provided to ethnic minority youth to implement economic development models.

Plan project staff go directly to families to learn about and support ethnic minority youth to develop their economy.

In addition to projects to enhance economic empowerment for disadvantaged youth in Lai Chau ; Plan International also implements a series of projects such as: "Gender equality, enhancing the status of ethnic minority women and girls in Lai Chau"; "Girls, young women and Vietnamese youth are positive drivers of change in realizing their rights to a green and sustainable future in Lai Chau"; "Model to enhance resilience to natural disasters and climate change"...

The above projects not only bring economic efficiency, but also contribute to solving social problems, including early marriage, early childbearing, and school dropout.

Through advocacy and practical economic support, many ethnic minority women and girls are empowered to develop themselves, have the opportunity to learn a trade, participate in the workforce and escape the vicious cycle of poverty.

From the above effectiveness, the local government and people expect that the above-mentioned support programs and projects will be expanded in scale, increase beneficiaries and continue to be maintained to contribute to poverty reduction and comprehensive development in the Lai Chau highlands.
