    Ha Tuyen was established in December 1975 on the basis of merging two provinces of Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang . When merged, Ha Tuyen province included two towns: Tuyen Quang town, Ha Giang town and 13 districts: Bac Quang, Chiem Hoa, Dong Van, Ham Yen, Hoang Su Phi, Meo Vac, Na Hang, Quan Ba, Son Duong, Vi Xuyen, Xin Man, Yen Minh, Yen Son. The provincial capital of the province was initially located in Ha Giang town and in 1979 was moved to Tuyen Quang town.
