Within the framework of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh received and worked with Mr. Simon O'Conell, General Director of the Netherlands Development Agency (SNV). The two sides agreed on a number of cooperation contents in the coming time.
At the meeting, Mr. Simon O'Conell proposed to Minister Dang Quoc Khanh to promote cooperation between SNV and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to adapt to climate change based on nature-based solutions, which is SNV's strength, using biogas. The SNV General Director said that Vietnam and SNV have a common goal of sustainable and circular agriculture , so Mr. O'Conell proposed that the two sides cooperate to mobilize resources from Dutch climate financial institutions to promote the potential of sustainable farming in Vietnam.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh emphasized that Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by climate change and rising sea levels. Therefore, enhancing resilience and adaptation to climate change is a vital priority for Vietnam. At the same time, with the Netherlands being a country with a lot of experience in water resources management, delta development, and climate change adaptation, the Minister therefore requested SNV to support and cooperate with the Ministry in strengthening water resources management, adapting to saline intrusion and rising sea levels in the Mekong Delta; and cooperating in clean energy conversion and development.
In addition, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh sincerely thanked SNV for cooperating with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in proposing the project "Nature-based climate change adaptation solutions in agriculture through private sector transformation in Vietnam" and assessed this as a promising start for the cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and SNV in the future.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh highly appreciated the proposals of the SNV Director General in proposing cooperation programs between the two sides. At the same time, the Minister suggested that SNV will have proposals to mobilize resources from financial institutions and climate funds established by the Netherlands to implement cooperation activities in line with the priorities of the two countries.
On this occasion, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh respectfully invited Mr. Simon O'Conell to visit Vietnam and work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to continue discussing and proposing cooperation activities between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and SNV in Vietnam.
