Hanoi: Increasing number of children hospitalized due to Covid-19, co-infection ( Video : Minh Nhat).
Seeing her child coughing and having a fever, Ms. NMN (Vinh Tuy, Hanoi ) thought it was just a common illness. However, after only one day, the child started vomiting and felt hot, so she quickly took her child to the doctor, and the result was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Ms. N. shared: "I just thought my child had a mild cough and a normal fever. I saw that he had difficulty breathing and had to be given oxygen when I took him to the hospital. When I tested him, I found out he had Covid-19."
Ms. N. is one of many parents whose children are being treated at Hanoi Children's Hospital for Covid-19. In recent weeks, as the Covid-19 outbreak in Hanoi has escalated, the number of children admitted to the hospital has also increased.

Hanoi Children's Hospital has fully prepared facilities, separate isolation rooms for children with Covid-19, medical equipment and supplies to be ready to receive treatment and control infections. Measures to prevent respiratory infections have also been strengthened to minimize the risk of spreading the disease in the hospital.

BSCKII Nguyen Thi Thanh Van, Head of the Examination Department, said: "Through screening, children with suspected factors such as having a family member with Covid-19 or showing symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing... will have their samples taken for testing."

"Taking samples for young children is sometimes difficult because they often cry and react strongly when the test strip is inserted into their nose. The waiting time for test results is about 1 hour," Dr. Van added.

At the Department of Infectious Diseases, Hanoi Children's Hospital, there are currently more than 20 pediatric patients being treated as inpatients due to Covid-19.
According to Dr. Nguyen Sy Duc, Department of Infectious Diseases, among the suspected cases tested for Covid-19, about 20% tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. In the group of children with the disease, about 5-10% had complications. Common conditions in severe cases include: laryngitis, pneumonia, respiratory failure...

There have been cases of children with Covid-19 being hospitalized with high fever, febrile convulsions, upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, and respiratory failure. To limit the risk of cross-infection, the hospital has arranged separate flows and closely monitored severe cases.

Ms. VTHT (Chuong My, Hanoi) said: "Seeing that the child's high fever showed no signs of abating, and the next day he started vomiting, the family took him to the doctor. The doctor diagnosed that the child's throat was swollen, had a lot of phlegm, and the Covid-19 test result was positive, even though no one in the family had any suspected symptoms of infection."

According to Dr. Duc, a notable situation is that children are co-infected with Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. Having multiple diseases at the same time poses a challenge in the care and treatment of pediatric patients.

"Co-infections are becoming more and more common, especially in young children with weak immune systems. We have recorded cases of children contracting hand, foot and mouth disease and Covid-19 or rotavirus and Covid-19 at the same time," Dr. Duc emphasized.

Ms. TKA (Kien Hung, Ha Dong) said: "My child has both grade 2 hand, foot and mouth disease and Covid-19. When the child had a continuous fever and refused to breastfeed, I took the child to the emergency room, where the doctor determined that the child had both diseases at the same time."

"We have experience in treating Covid-19, but we should not be subjective. Parents should make their children wear masks, wash their hands regularly, eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water, supplement vitamins and take their children to the doctor immediately if they have suspicious symptoms," Dr. Duc emphasized.

Dr. Duc added that the medical team has been thoroughly trained and is ready to respond if the epidemic develops complicatedly. Currently, Hanoi Children's Hospital can receive up to hundreds of cases in case the number of Covid-19 cases increases sharply.
Close coordination between family, community and hospital along with awareness of disease prevention will help protect children's health and minimize serious and critical cases.
