On May 17, Ha Dong meteorological station recorded a temperature of 41.3 degrees Celsius, the highest in May in its more than 30-year history of operation.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that of the four remaining stations in Hanoi , only Hoai Duc had 39 degrees Celsius. Lang station had 41 degrees Celsius, Ba Vi and Son Tay stations were both above 40 degrees Celsius. The perceived outdoor temperature could be 2-4 degrees Celsius higher.
Also having temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in the North are Lac Son station and Hoa Binh city (Hoa Binh province), Viet Tri (Phu Tho), Phu Ly ( Ha Nam ). In addition, there are 8 provinces above 39 degrees Celsius. In the Central region, Hoi Xuan, Tinh Gia (Thanh Hoa), Tay Hieu, Do Luong (Nghe An) districts are above 40 degrees Celsius.
The cause of the heat wave is the expansion of the western low pressure area combined with the foehn effect.

The Meteorological Agency forecasts that tomorrow the North will continue to experience severe heat with a wider area, the highest temperature will be 36-39 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 39 degrees Celsius. Heat and severe heat in the North and the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen is forecast to last until May 23.
Severe heat, especially severe heat combined with low humidity and southwest winds causing the foehn effect, leads to the risk of explosions and fires in residential areas due to increased demand for electricity; risk of forest fires. Heat can also cause dehydration, exhaustion; heat stroke due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
