Lockbit said in October that it had obtained “large amounts” of sensitive data from the aerospace giant and would release it online if Boeing did not pay a ransom by November 2.
By the end of last week, the hackers announced on their website that Boeing’s data had been made public. According to records obtained by Reuters, most of the leaked data was dated as late as October 2023.
In a statement, Boeing confirmed that some parts of the company and its supply chain had been affected by a cybersecurity incident. “We are aware of a ransomware attack that has released information that it claims was stolen from our systems,” it said.
The aircraft manufacturer, which is also a major US defense contractor, also said it "will continue to investigate the incident and maintain coordination with authorities and potentially affected parties."
However, the company said it “remains confident” the incident did not pose a threat to aircraft or flight safety. Boeing declined to comment on whether Lockbit had obtained defense data or other sensitive information.
Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro said Lockbit's ransomware first appeared on cybercrime forums in January 2020, before spreading worldwide , with common targets being organizations in the US, India and Brazil.
According to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Lockbit is the culprit behind attacks on 1,700 organizations in the country.
Last week, the US branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) was also hit by a ransomware attack, disrupting trading of US Treasury bonds.
Some ransomware experts and analysts say the signs point to Lockbit being behind the hack that targeted a branch of one of the world's largest banks.
However, the hacker group's official website, which often posts a list of victims, does not list ICBC.
