Two outstanding midwives

In the journey of welcoming little angels, alongside obstetricians, midwives are indispensable partners. Midwifery is a glorious profession, but also one filled with hardship and challenges. It's a profession specializing in obstetrics, accompanying mothers from pregnancy until they see their beloved children born.

Graduating from a midwifery vocational school in 2007, she continued her studies to earn a Bachelor's degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing in 2010, working while studying. With 18 years of experience, Nurse Nguyen Thi Huyen Nhung, Head of the Obstetrics Department ( An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital), has experienced all the tasks of a midwife and nurse, from patient admission, monitoring and caring for the entire labor process, assisting in childbirth, and caring for mothers and newborns. She has also participated in handling emergency situations, saving the lives of both mothers and newborns, especially caring for premature and weak newborns. “As both a midwife and a mother, I understand the hardships of pregnancy and the pain of childbirth, so I always support and share the sorrows, joys, and happiness with mothers and their families when they have a healthy baby,” said Ms. Huyen Nhung.

On average, the Obstetrics Department receives 30-40 pregnant women and other obstetric and gynecological emergencies daily, often dealing with difficult cases and pregnant women with infectious diseases. Midwives are always busy, from patient registration, monitoring and caring for the baby throughout labor, assisting with deliveries, caring for mothers and newborns after birth, providing counseling and support for breastfeeding, and guiding mothers on health monitoring and family planning. Ms. Huyen Nhung shared: “Midwifery – the modern-day midwife – is a glorious profession, but also one filled with hardship and challenges. Specializing in obstetrics, it demands patience, calmness, and a high level of expertise from midwives, accompanying mothers from pregnancy until they see their children born.”

Specialist Level 1 Nurse Le Kim Xoan, Head Nurse of the Outpatient Department at An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, is happy to accompany expectant mothers.

“As a midwife and nurse at the outpatient clinic, I have to serve twice as hard. Besides my professional duties, a positive attitude and good communication skills are paramount. Midwives and nurses monitor health status daily, provide nutritional advice, guide newborn care, and monitor surgical wounds for mothers. Upon discharge, they also provide postpartum care advice and monitor mothers and babies at home,” said Ms. Le Kim Xoan (Specialist Level 1 Nursing, Head of the Outpatient Clinic Unit, An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital).

Having worked in the profession for over a decade, midwives understand the agonizing pain of childbirth and the joyful smiles shared with the families when both mother and child are healthy. Busy with the tasks of assisting in delivery, caring for mother and baby, and experiencing the pain of labor alongside the happiness of welcoming a new newborn, they are dedicated to their work. “In healthcare, the patient is the center; their joy and happiness with their newborn child is enough to warm our hearts during sleepless nights caring for the health of mothers and babies. During shifts, we often stay up all night, busy dealing with anxious family members who don't know how to care for the mother and child, constantly calling for help. We still patiently and wholeheartedly assist them. We think it's just a necessary task, but when we attend patient council meetings and receive heartfelt praise from the patients' families, it truly warms our hearts,” shared Ms. Le Kim Xoan.

Head of Nursing Department, An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Truong Kim Thuyen, commented: "The entire hospital has 105 midwives. These two are exemplary midwives, dedicated to their work, passionate about their profession, and always performing their duties well. For example, Huyen Nhung, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, was assigned to the isolation area to care for patients. Despite having two young children at home, she still complied with the assignment; she was dedicated and attentive to patient care, and even though she herself contracted COVID-19, she volunteered to serve COVID-19 patients. As for Xoan, she is very skilled in communicating with and serving patients, guiding the midwives, caring for patients, and is very skillful and understanding of patients. Despite facing many difficulties, they have maintained their commitment and enthusiasm for the profession, playing an important role in welcoming 'little angels' into the world and bringing joy and happiness to families..."

“Midwives – the silent doctors, with hearts full of love for mothers and babies, work diligently and patiently, unafraid of hardship and difficulties to fulfill their noblest mission, ensuring both mother and child are healthy so that the whole family can be completely happy,” shared Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Hien, Director of the Department of Health.
