According to the Department of Irrigation, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the peak of drought and water shortage in the Southeast region is mid-May and the dry season in the Central region will last until the end of August.

Accordingly, about 60,000 hectares of summer-autumn crop area and about 20,000 hectares of winter-spring crop 2023-2024 will face the risk of drought and water shortage. Continue to implement solutions to respond to drought and water shortage according to the direction of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, at the same time, proactively develop water source scenarios, response plans, and water supply for people and production.

The Department of Irrigation noted that localities should focus on reviewing and checking water sources at irrigation works in the Central region, and only organize production in areas where irrigation works ensure supply for the entire crop; for areas without enough water, consider postponing the crop or changing the crop structure.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Head of Operation and Irrigation Management Department, Department of Irrigation, noted that localities should prioritize water sources for daily life, carefully prepare plans and strategies to ensure minimum domestic water supply for people at risk of water shortage due to the impact of drought.

At the same time, closely coordinate with units managing and operating hydroelectric reservoirs to develop a strict regulation plan, ensuring additional water sources for downstream areas in accordance with the water intake capacity of irrigation works and saving water from hydroelectric reservoirs.

“It is important to note that before operating irrigation works to take water or when people bring water to the fields to irrigate crops, they must pay attention to controlling the salinity on site, must measure to determine the salinity at the allowable level before operating irrigation works to take water and bring water to supply crops. The Department of Irrigation will coordinate with scientific units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to regularly provide information to localities on the situation of salinity intrusion, current status and forecast and water resource situation,” said Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung.
