Yonhap, citing information from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), reported that they "detected and are analyzing several ballistic missiles launched (by North Korea) in a northeasterly direction at around 6:50 a.m. (local time)."
"To prepare for further North Korean launches, the South Korean military is strengthening its surveillance capabilities and maintaining vigilance, while sharing information closely" with allies Tokyo and Washington, the JCS added.

Japan also confirmed the launch, with its maritime self-defense forces notifying that one missile fell into waters outside its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
"Vehicles should pay attention to the information provided, and if you spot any falling objects, please do not approach them but report it to the coast guard," NHK quoted the coast guard as saying.
This is North Korea's second missile launch in a week, following its firing of a series of short-range ballistic missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula on September 12.
Later, the KCNA news agency confirmed that Pyongyang had conducted a test of a multiple rocket launcher system with a 600 mm warhead.
In a related development, at his confirmation hearing before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on September 17 (Washington DC time), Lieutenant General Xavier Brunson, nominated by US President Joe Biden to command US Forces Korea (USFK), stated that North Korea's rapid development of nuclear and missile capabilities is the "single greatest threat" to USFK.
General Brunson, currently the commander of the First Corps of the U.S. Army and based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (Washington state), also expressed concern about military exchanges between North Korea and Russia. The general emphasized his commitment to finding ways to minimize the risks associated with this military alliance.
The hearing took place amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula following Pyongyang's missile launches, its surprise announcement of a uranium enrichment facility, US-South Korea military exercises, and the release of garbage-laden balloons from North Korea into South Korea.

If confirmed, General Brunson would lead three commands: the Combined Forces Korea-U.S. Command, the United Nations Command, and USFK, comprising approximately 28,500 troops.
The current commander of these three commands is General Paul LaCamera.
