In a comprehensive strategy to enhance global recognition and reputation, Korea will update and edit national information on influential platforms such as Wikipedia and travel websites amid rapidly changing media and digital landscapes.
South Korea also aims to strengthen its position as a leading tourism country.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea (MCST) has announced the Global Public Relations Plan for the Digital Transformation Era (2024-2027), which includes the establishment of the Global Public Relations Strategy Committee in the second half of this year.
The committee will focus on providing accurate and up-to-date information about Korea through various channels.
MCST's medium- and long-term global public relations plan is inspired by successful models in countries such as Sweden and Finland.
These models have outlined strategic directions for effectively positioning and promoting the national image.
The public-private committee, comprised of government officials, branding experts and journalists from international media outlets, will use generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and leverage the growing influence of non-traditional media to determine what kind of image Korea has and what information global audiences really want to know about the country through annual surveys.
Korea's image and story will be built around the vision of becoming a “global backbone nation connecting the world.”
This vision will be underpinned by six keywords: “innovation,” “creativity,” “friendly,” “trustworthy,” “development” and “safety.” These keywords were derived from a survey of 13,000 people in 26 countries in 2023.
MCST will also improve the accessibility and timeliness of information for foreign media by ensuring that they receive important policy updates and news on international events simultaneously with domestic media.
Regular policy briefings will be held specifically for foreign media to ensure they are fully informed.
Reflecting the changing media landscape, the strategy seeks to expand collaboration with non-traditional social media platforms by partnering with influencers.
The programs will be designed to promote positive perceptions of Korea, inviting international students, reporters and foreign workers to become honorary ambassadors of Korea.
Additionally, social media influencers will be invited to Korea to experience and share insights into their areas of interest, helping to produce content that highlights Korean culture and society, thereby enhancing the country’s global image.
Furthermore, immigrants who have settled in Korea and foreign workers in Korea are also considered bridges, spreading information related to Korea to their homeland.
Therefore, the Korean side will provide accurate information to help them share positive experiences and become honorary ambassadors for Korea./.
