The event, organized by Bonghwa County, the Vietnamese Embassy in South Korea, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ly family clan of Vietnam in South Korea, aims to strengthen the foundation for cooperation and exchange between local governments and the people of the two countries.
The event included the topping-out ceremony for the Community Center, Vietnamese Culture Day, and the installation of the statue of King Ly Thai To in the Vietnamese village space in Bonghwa.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Park Hyeon Guk, chairman of Bonghwa County, stated that Bonghwa is the homeland of the Ly Dynasty royal family when they first arrived in Gyrorio. For a long time, it has served as an invisible bridge connecting the Korean and Vietnamese people.
The bronze statue of King Ly Thai To, standing 5.5 meters tall, was funded by Bonghwa County with a total cost of 300 million won (US$214,000).
The statue is modeled exactly after the 11-meter-tall statue of King Ly Thai To currently located in Hanoi , according to the Bac Ninh Provincial Electronic Information Portal.
The reason Bonghwa County erected the statue of King Ly Thai To stems from a deep and meaningful historical connection. Changpyeong-ri village is the ancestral home of the Hwasan Lee clan, a lineage descended from King Ly Thai To.
“Earlier this month, we received permission from Vietnam to erect the statue. This is the first time a statue of Ly Thai To has been erected in an area outside of Vietnam,” a Bonghwa County official shared with the media.
The placement of the statue of King Ly Thai To in Bonghwa has become a symbol of faith, friendship, and shared aspirations towards a prosperous future.
In addition, the unveiling of the statue is part of a larger project.
Bonghwa County is currently constructing the "K-Vietnam Valley" on a 118,890m² plot of land around the Zhongxiao Road area, with a total investment of 200 billion won (US$143 million). The project is expected to be completed in 2033.
The series of events on August 24th was attended by approximately 800 people, including the Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, Ho An Phong; officials from the Korean Ministry of Culture and North Gyeongsangbuk Province; Chairman of Bonghwa County, Park Hyeon Guk; Vietnamese Ambassador to Korea, Vu Ho; and Vietnamese Consul General in Busan, Doan Phuong Lan.
In addition, the event also brought together representatives of Vietnamese associations and a large number of Vietnamese people living, studying, and working in South Korea.
The series of events is seen as vivid evidence of the interplay between tradition and modernity, between historical depth and contemporary vitality, contributing to further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the Vietnamese and Korean people.
