According to Yonhap news agency, on June 16, a series of seven car crashes on a road in Gangwon province in the Northeast of the country left 82 people injured.
The collision involving three buses, three trucks and a passenger sedan occurred at 1:26 p.m. local time on National Highway 44 in Hongcheon City, 100 kilometers east of Seoul. The three buses were carrying teachers and students from a Seoul middle school on a field trip.
Authorities said three of the 82 injured were in critical condition. Most of the injured were students and teachers on the buses.
About 30 firefighters were mobilized to carry out rescue work. The Korea Herald news agency quoted police investigating the accident as saying that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The incident is under further investigation.
