Recently, the famous pizza chain Dodo Pizza, the famous "1 hour" noodle shop on Nguyen Phi Khanh Street (District 1), Long Chat shop (Tan Binh District) known by many people for its pork intestine dish or most recently the Hot&Cold milk tea brand with dozens of branches in many provinces and cities... have all suddenly announced their closure in Ho Chi Minh City.

Why are many shops in Ho Chi Minh City closed?

On May 16, the famous pizza chain from Russia - Dodo Pizza announced that it will stop operating all 4 branches in Ho Chi Minh City from May 26, surprising many diners. In the announcement, Dodo Pizza said it will close all 4 branches in Ho Chi Minh City and still maintain the store in Dong Xoai ( Binh Phuoc ).

Talking about the reason for closing all branches in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Nguyen Hoa Ngoc - CEO of Dodo Pizza Vietnam shared: "Withdrawing from Ho Chi Minh City is not a failure, but a strategy".

According to this pizza chain, from the store in Dong Xoai, they plan to develop further in "rising cities" outside of Ho Chi Minh City such as Tan Uyen, Long Khanh, Vinh Long , Phu My, Chon Thanh, Binh Long... "We are not looking for the most crowded place. We are looking for the most suitable place. We do not choose to be a latecomer. We choose to be the leader in a market that no one has dared to try yet," Dodo Pizza shared.

Since May 27, social networks have also been flooded with information about the closure of the unnamed noodle shop at 12C Nguyen Phi Khanh Street, which has been famous in Ho Chi Minh City for decades and only sells for 1 hour.

Accordingly, from May 30, 2025, the restaurant will stop selling after decades of being a familiar place for diners. Surprisingly, a popular noodle shop in Ho Chi Minh City closed and suddenly became a " culinary event" when on the last days of sale, customers flocked to wait 1 hour in advance. The noodle shop that opened 1 hour ago now has to stop accepting customers after 15 minutes.

Sharing the reason for closing, the owner said that due to old age and poor health, the members of the restaurant could not maintain this job, and there was no successor, so she had to sadly say goodbye to customers.

After the above event, information about Long Chat restaurant (Tan Binh District) ceasing operations at its branch in Ho Chi Minh City was also shared on many social media platforms. The notice posted in front of the restaurant shared that the restaurant "faced a serious media crisis" leading to many orders being placed and canceled, many comments containing personal attacks, psychologically affected staff having to take a temporary leave, and families and staff falling into a state of insecurity.

"And the most heartbreaking thing is that the establishment at 268 Hong Lac is forced to stop operating," the notice posted in front of the restaurant stated. Accordingly, this restaurant stopped operating in the context of the dish of pig intestines being fiercely controversial on social networks with suspicions that it was "magically" made from normal pig intestines and soaked in chemicals that are harmful to health.

The media crisis forced the restaurant, which was well-known on social media, to close.

Most recently, on May 31, Hot&Cold, a famous milk tea and skewer brand that has been around since 2011, announced that it would close all of its branches from June 30, 2025, shocking regular customers. In the farewell announcement, the brand said that from a small store, Hot&Cold has grown to more than 65 branches nationwide, at times reaching more than 80 locations - present in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Can Tho, My Tho, Ben Tre, Da Nang...

However, this brand did not talk about the reason for the closure, making many diners curious.

F&B is facing many difficulties?

It can be clearly seen that in just the second half of May, many familiar restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City continuously said goodbye to customers, "ceased operations", "stopped business"... surprising many people.

Each restaurant has its own underlying causes. Some restaurants have a media crisis, some have a brand "due to many objective factors and new strategic orientations", and some restaurants have a subjective factor such as the health of the seller...

Are F&B businesses in Ho Chi Minh City facing many difficulties? The Dodo Pizza Vietnam brand itself admits: "Big cities are dream places, but they are also places that easily make people fade away. Fierce competition, high costs, and the cycle of worn-out strategies sometimes make the bravest thing to do is to dare to cut and regenerate."

This sharing is not without reason because currently in Ho Chi Minh City, the pizza business market is quite competitive with a series of brands such as Pizza 4P's, The Pizza Company, Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza...

Sharing with Thanh Nien , the owner of a beef noodle shop with dozens of branches in Ho Chi Minh City also said that fierce competition when many shops sprung up like mushrooms as well as limiting customers' spending due to economic difficulties also made her business "no longer the same as before".

Many "startup" restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City continuously appear, creating increasingly fierce competition in the F&B sector.

"After the Covid-19 pandemic in recent years, sales have slowed down and customers are no longer the same as before. At times, some of my branches even had to bear losses. As a restaurant owner, I have tried many ways to improve the situation such as advertising on social media platforms, developing delivery through food apps, having promotional programs for customers... but the current situation is still very difficult," she said.

Some other popular restaurants say that in addition to competition with newly opened restaurants, tightening customer spending has also made their business more difficult in recent years.
