International Day for Biological Diversity was launched by the United Nations. The event affirmed the position of Vietnam - one of the 16 countries with the highest biodiversity in the world and sent a strong message about the conservation of "global treasures" in the face of increasing challenges.
Biodiversity plays an important role in food security, people's livelihoods and the development of economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and medicinal plants. Natural ecosystems not only provide construction materials, fuel and medicinal plants but also create beautiful landscapes, are the foundation for good customs and practices and ensure sustainable development.
Despite possessing a valuable biological treasure, Vietnam is facing great pressure from economic development, climate change, environmental pollution, forest degradation and alien species invasion. These factors threaten ecosystems, causing ecological imbalance and reducing rare genetic resources. Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri emphasized at the ceremony: "Conserving biodiversity is the responsibility of the whole community, not only for national interests but also for international commitments".
In addition to the results Vietnam has achieved, Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Representative of UNDP Vietnam, said that Vietnam's biodiversity is a "global treasure under threat", and this natural resource is under increasing pressure.
Recent studies have shown that more than a third of Vietnam’s mammal species are at risk of extinction. This is not just a national concern, but reflects a global crisis.
“Biodiversity loss threatens key foundations of the economy, food security and human health,” said Patrick Haverman.
Sharing the same opinion, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri said that nature conservation and biodiversity are under great pressure from economic development, climate change, environmental pollution, forest degradation and invasion by alien species. These losses are irreversible if we do not act promptly and resolutely, promoting the strength of the whole society.
Vice Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Cao Son said that Ninh Binh is one of the localities assessed to have high biodiversity with diverse and rich ecosystems, divided into 5 typical systems: limestone mountain forest ecosystem, hill ecosystem, plain ecosystem, water ecosystem and coastal ecosystem. The ecosystems are all typical in terms of species populations and determine biodiversity.
Recognizing the importance of biodiversity in the process of socio-economic development, Ninh Binh has actively participated in and implemented international conventions on biodiversity conservation, the Law on Biodiversity and the Law on Environmental Protection...

On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri called on ministries, branches, central agencies, local authorities, organizations and individuals to take practical actions to address the issues of nature conservation and biodiversity.
In particular, continue to perfect mechanisms and policies towards harmoniously combining conservation with exploitation and rational use of biodiversity; between conservation, exploitation and rational use of biodiversity with hunger eradication, poverty reduction, green livelihood development, ecotourism and environmental education.
Effectively implement the national strategy on biodiversity and national biodiversity conservation planning, aiming to restore and ensure integrity and connectivity; biodiversity is preserved and used sustainably to contribute to socio-economic development towards a green and sustainable economy.
Promoting science and technology, digital transformation in ecosystem monitoring and restoration, such as: building a digital database on national biodiversity; promoting research on ecosystem restoration such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, and upstream forests; supporting national parks, conservation areas, and wildlife rescue centers to apply technology in managing and monitoring precious flora and fauna.
At the same time, develop plans, allocate funds and mobilize financial resources, diversify investment sources for biodiversity conservation; promote cooperation with domestic and foreign partners to attract and maximize financial support and investment for nature and biodiversity conservation, fairly and reasonably share benefits from genetic resources and develop sustainable livelihood models for the community.
Strengthen communication, education and raise public awareness about nature conservation and biodiversity; diversify communication channels on biodiversity, integrate educational and propaganda programs on biodiversity conservation in the school system... Timely detect, propose and honor individuals, groups and communities with practical and effective models, activities and initiatives in biodiversity conservation.
