Pantomime art first appeared in Vietnam through the play Beauty and the Beast.
This coming December, the pantomime Beauty and the Beast will be presented to Vietnamese audiences for the first time, with the entire production team and actors coming from the UK. To do this, Ms. Do Thu Giang, Director of AMO Vietnam (the unit that brought Beauty and the Beast to Vietnam) spent time in the UK to find suitable producers for the play.
After meeting and evaluating many partners, Ms. Giang chose a reputable and experienced production unit, which was also flexible in meeting the specific requirements of the Vietnamese market. During the process of working with the British partner, Ms. Giang agreed on production plans, especially in the selection of actors and technical crew.
The Vietnamese version of Beauty and the Beast is staged in a fun, engaging style with lots of interaction with the audience.
Not only taking on the role of general manager, Ms. Giang also directly participates in the process of adjusting the script to suit Vietnamese audiences. In addition, she and her team also organize trial script reading sessions with Vietnamese students to assess the level of understanding and appeal of the story to young audiences, thereby making timely adjustments.
One of the major challenges was transporting props and costumes from the UK to Vietnam, as there were over 171 packages of costumes and props needed for the play. Therefore, the crew had to work with shipping companies to ensure customs clearance was smooth and equipment was installed on schedule.
According to Ms. Do Thu Giang, the casting process for Beauty and the Beast was no less challenging, as she had to review hundreds of resumes and audition videos for the main characters. Despite the difficulties (such as a lack of suitable actors or the actors’ busy schedules), Ms. Giang persevered in choosing the most suitable people for the important roles.
"I understand the risks of bringing a new type of theater to the Vietnamese market, from high production costs to audience acceptance. However, with my passion and belief in the value of pantomime, I did not hesitate to invest and devote myself to making this project successful, bringing a new experience to Vietnamese audiences," Ms. Do Thu Giang added.
Panto Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to take place at Hoa Binh Theater (HCMC) from December 6 to 8 and Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace (Hanoi) from December 13 to 17.
