The core of mass sports

Building and expanding the model of sports families is one of the key focuses in the development of sports and physical education. Sports families create a favorable environment for members to improve their health, support the maintenance and development of their passion, and enhance their competitive abilities. Not only are they key contributors to the development of mass sports and the spread of sports love in the community, many sports families also serve as breeding grounds, providing support and supplying talent for high-performance sports in Vietnam.

Strengthening family bonds through sports.

For a long time, Mr. Nguyen Sy Hung and his son, Nguyen Sy Nhat Anh, from Ward 5, Dong Ha City, have worked together as referees and commentators for amateur football tournaments in Quang Tri province. Those familiar with Quang Tri sports consider them an ideal model of a exemplary sports family, excelling in competition and making significant contributions to mass sports.

Mr. Nguyen Van Anh Dung, head of the organizing committee for many amateur football tournaments in Dong Ha City, said: "Refereeing and commentary play a crucial role in determining the success of each tournament. The Quang Tri football community always highly appreciates referee Sy Hung for his expertise, dedication, and credibility, while commentator Nhat Anh has an extremely inspiring voice."

The criteria for recognizing a family as a sports family are stipulated in Circular No. 01/2019/TT-BVHTTDL dated January 17, 2019, of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism . Accordingly, a household where the total number of members regularly participating in sports and physical activities accounts for 50% or more and the total time spent practicing regularly is 60 minutes or more per day is recognized as a sports family.

Mr. Sy Hung and his son have brought many interesting things and made positive contributions to amateur football in Quang Tri. Mr. Sy Hung was once a talented midfielder for Dong Ha football. As he got older, he switched to refereeing amateur football. For the past 7 years, although he hasn't received formal training, through practical experience, a willingness to learn from professional referees, and up-to-date knowledge of football rules, Mr. Sy Hung has successfully officiated amateur football matches in Quang Tri.

Inheriting a talent for football and receiving dedicated guidance on technique, experience, and competitive spirit from his father, Nhat Anh plays the king of sports very well. “My father and I always stood side-by-side when playing for the Neighborhood 5 team at the 2013 Football Tournament and Sports Festival of Ward 5.”

At the 2017 and 2021 Ward 5 Sports Festivals, my father was the coach, and I was a player on the neighborhood team. I always want to express my sincere gratitude to my father for guiding me into the world of football, helping me experience a wide range of emotions as I immerse myself in the world of football,” Nhat Anh shared. Two years ago, Nhat Anh switched to being a commentator. With his powerful voice and deep knowledge of football, he has built a reputation as an inspiring figure.

“As if it were destiny, my son and I continue to be together on the field as referee and commentator. I frequently instruct and explain many football terms, interacting directly on the field to help him provide more accurate commentary on each play. Besides that, Nhật Anh also supports and encourages me to successfully complete my duties as match official. Through sports activities, our family bond has grown stronger,” Mr. Sỹ Hùng happily said.

Sports serve as a special bridge, bringing family members closer together. The family of Mr. Tran Trung Hoanh and Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh (Dong Luong Ward, Dong Ha City) is a vivid example of this. Mr. and Mrs. Hoanh share a passion for running, gym workouts, boxing, and more.

In particular, running has helped them actively support each other on every run. Mr. Hoanh said that the advantage of both husband and wife sharing a love of sports is that they have the motivation to improve together. When playing sports together, their diet and rest habits are also adjusted in a positive way, helping both maintain good form and health. Having a life partner makes maintaining a running habit easier.

He shared, “We wake up together at 4:30 every day to go jogging. Going through long distances, challenging training sessions, and participating in marathons together has helped my wife and I understand each other better. Completing a marathon together, exploring new routes, or simply running in the rain all become beautiful memories.” Ms. Ngoc Anh added, “When we train together, my husband and I always encourage each other to achieve our goals. Our shared love of sports has inspired our two young children to participate, creating an active and healthy lifestyle for the whole family.”

Making a positive contribution to sports in Quang Tri.

Over time, the development of sports families has made a positive contribution to promoting the development of mass sports movements.

The family sports model also contributes to promoting the socialization of sports development, as each family invests in facilities for sports activities at home or provides material support for building sports training and competition facilities, sponsoring sports teams, etc. Senior martial arts master Nguyen Quang Tam, head of the Mai Han martial arts school, said: “The family is a solid foundation that helps its members develop their sports careers. Therefore, I always focus on maintaining and promoting the family's martial arts tradition to my children and grandchildren.”

Currently, my four sons and two grandsons are spreading the essence of traditional martial arts by opening martial arts training classes for people inside and outside the province. Our greatest happiness is that our children and grandchildren have achieved many high results in national traditional martial arts competitions, contributing to the training of many athletes for the province's sports." Besides promoting the role of grassroots sports, sports families are also the first training ground for talents. It is the grandparents and parents who instill energy in their family members to pursue sports, develop their talents, and guide them towards a professional career.

Player Truong Van Thai Quy shared: “I am fortunate to have been born into a sports-loving family, with one older brother and three older sisters who are all actively involved in local sports activities. My success today is due to inheriting family traditions, especially the encouragement and support from my parents and siblings, which have helped me confidently pursue a professional sports career and achieve many impressive accomplishments.”

According to Phan Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the provincial sports sector always pays special attention to the development of mass sports at the grassroots level, including encouraging and supporting the development of the "sports family" model. Currently, the percentage of families participating in sports and physical training reaches 28.6% of the total number of households. The development of sports families has positively impacted the mass sports movement with many diverse forms.

This has contributed to raising the percentage of people regularly practicing sports and physical exercise in the province to 37.9%. From these sports-oriented families, we have discovered and selected many young talents for high-performance sports in Quang Tri, including many athletes who have represented the Vietnamese national team and achieved many outstanding results in international competitions.
